That is so rude to eavesdrop on people's conversations like that. People need to butt out of shit that doesn't concern them. I can see why the mother cried. She was humiliated.
He likely didn't want them to know before he left cause he was afraid they would order the lobster or double up on the chocolate fudge cake.
If you have to ask... Man, I have never had one of those turn out well. After they get a serious boyfriend or get married, the guy doesn't want me to be friends with the girl anymore.
