Andy Reid Defends Goal-Line Decision

Ever since Andy Reid became head coach, and ever since Donovan McNabb became Reid's starting quarterback, the Eagles' offense has always been known for its passing game.

The Eagles like to pass around 65 percent of the time in their West Coast offense.

Why, then, did Reid call four consecutive running plays inside the Chicago 5-yard line in the waning minutes of the Eagles' 24-20 loss to Chicago at Soldier Field on Sunday night?

"I thought we could run it in," Reid said Monday in his day-after news conference.

They couldn't. The Bears stuffed Tony Hunt once and Correll Buckhalter twice at the goal line to preserve the win.

Reid said the Bears stayed in their base defense instead of going to a goal-line formation, enticing the Eagles to run.

"I thought we had them on their heels just a little bit," Reid said. "Their defensive line had played basically that whole game because of injuries they had. We were running the ball effectively that last series and I thought we had a chance to pound it in there."

That chance faded away when tight end Matt Schobel whiffed on his block against Alex Brown, who made the fourth-down tackle.

But there was more blame to go around. Hank Baskett didn't seal his block against safety Kevin Payne, who surged into the backfield and appeared to slow Buckhalter's path into the pile.

Reid put more of the blame on Baskett.

"Actually, the guy was outside of Schobel, and the guy rushed around the edge there and Matt has to pin him there," Reid said. "Then, on the right side, which is really where the main problem came, the defender came inside our wing there."

Still, Reid's play calling was curious given his propensity to involve his top playmakers, usually in the passing game.

He didn't have Brian Westbrook and L.J. Smith, but he still had McNabb, whose record on sneaks Reid said was "almost flawless" in those rare occasions Reid calls the play.

But Reid was still concerned about McNabb's sore chest from an injury last Sunday against the Steelers.

Apparently, McNabb was physically capable of withstanding three sacks and passing the ball 41 times, but not executing a half-yard run.

"I didn't feel comfortable with him having sat out all week of practice because of an injury," Reid said. "Common sense tells you that you have to be smart with that."

But in the same news conference, Reid was asked if McNabb was limited by his injury.

"I don't think so," Reid said.

When asked if he would have been able to execute a quarterback sneak, McNabb said he was more than willing.

"If the sneak would have been called, I would have been more than willing to do it," McNabb said. "You know, when you get to that situation -- no matter what play is called -- you have to execute, and we didn't."

Yeah I know...

I don't understand why he didn't just run a QB sneak. I mean, the running backs were getting stuffed again and again by the Bear's defense at the goal-line.

But whatever, like I said, Reid is always right in his own world. Just like before when he stated "we are fine at wide receiver." All it took for him to realize his fault was three straight losses in the NFC Championship game. So who knows. Maybe if he costs us another game or two because of the same stupid decisions, he will learn!

Dunno. 4 attempts to move the ball 4 yards. Hard to not believe your OL could get the score. I'd trust my OL to do the same...
