OT Anthem Politics

Looking for some insight from the diverse forum.

I actually had no problem with Kaepernick not standing for the National Anthem. It's not something I agree with, but I understand as an American that it is his right to do so or not. I also believe, like him, that there are things in this country that need to change regarding how certain law enforcement people treat certain black people.

That being said, there is a new picture of Kaepernick wearing socks that have pigs in police hats on them, and to me, that moves from protest to hate. I have two brothers in law that are cops, so it offends me. Am I wrong or overreacting? If they wore pictures of sambo on their uniform would that be ok? Is that the same?

 

The fact that he protests police brutality and perceived legal system injustice by not standing for a National Anthem and then inferring that the entire country is supporting said atrocities is ridiculous. The country is so much bigger than that , which was fought for by brave men and women to allow this person and others to make millions of dollars throwing an inflated pig skin around. He is a typical hypocritical, dumb-ass.

By not paying respect to this country regardless of the smaller problems it suffers (which happens everywhere) he shows he is not fit to reap the benefits of what this country has offered him and countless other people of all races and religions here.

And it just goes to show you the type of person he is when he wears those socks. Wasn't Freddy Gray's judge black? Shouldn't he be wearing some sort of sock protesting that judge?

Finally. Fuck Colin. He sucks in Football and in life.

 

I support his right to protest against the government...but he should do it off the job...he's paid to entertain and signed a contract with an American sports franchise ....he should respect the fans at game time. I'm not religious but I'll close my eyes and join a family in prayer if I'm invited to dinner...it's showing respect. He could take some of his millions and run an ad for his beliefs with more to say than sitting on his butt

 

Some people have disagreed with me on this, but I think he's an unhappy person in general, based on his decline over the last couple years and his demanding out. He is unrecognizable compared to the cocky, happy dude that led this team to a Super Bowl. I don't have a problem with the message, I just think it would carry more weight if I knew it was coming from someone that wasn't angry at the world for other reasons.

 

Who fucking cares? They're socks. My socks are more offensive and they are plain old socks.

 

Since you asked....IMO, you're wrong and you're overreacting. It's a free country, and has been pointed out, people have died to protect his freedom to protest (and wear socks that some people might find offensive).....I'm personally sick and tired of "patriotism" being used to shame us and to corral us into a herd mentality for the benefit of a corrupt government AND corrupt corporate oligarchy. Again (because it obviously needs repeating), it's a free country, like it or don't. If you don't like Kaepernick's actions, you're free to ignore him. All your ranting does is give him credibility.....

 

Protest and free speech are protected rights and as much as I don't like the way he's choosing to do it, I fully support his right to do it.

That said, if he ends up getting black-balled by his teammates and pisses off his coaches to the point where they cut him, versus dealing with the headache he might cause them, that's fully within their rights too.

 

The thing is, he was already on the verge of being cut before any of this happened. He has been injured and hasn't played well in a couple seasons now. I just hope that if he is cut, it doesn't become some big thing about how he was released for his beliefs.

 

I think most people get that the NFL only cares about whether a guy can play or not.

 

I pretty much don't give a shit about it. I think people get too caught up in respecting this country, the military, police, etc. They are paid, they get compensated, they get good benefits.

As far as his gripe with police killing blacks, I think he's blowing it out of proportion and attention whoring. I think he was raised by white people? I think he's probably just rebelling and probably in a dark place personally and this is his outlet, probably struggling with his own personal identity. He's overreacting to justify his own blackness.

Don't really mind him protesting though, i hate jingoism.

I was just questioning his intentions after the socks. He "seemed" sincere in his interviews following his sit in protest, talking about a sector of the country being singled out. Then gies and wears socks depicting pigs in police hats.

 

For a typical person, I could care less. Do your thing. But for 'celebrity' types to do this, where it reaches millions, and people actually lookup to these celebrity types, I find it stupid and irresponsible. All he's doing is stoking the flames of hate.

I've got no problems with what he's doing. Guys were enfant terribles in the 60''s and 70''s and that behavior was bemoaned but generally accepted. But given his level of play he's not going to have an opportunity to turn heads very much longer. People keep mentioning Muhammed Ali and Jim Brown as examples of similar protest. It ain't even in the same ballpark. They took on social issues while being utter professionals and entertainers. It was understlood a high level of performance was necessay to achieve the visibility needed to say something ..... How does backing up Blain Gabbert or getting outright released achieve this?
