Another example of how being excited over a HS player on signing day isn't always accurate. He fell behind players rated much lower than him during his time at Oregon.
Sophomore Anthony Wallace, a former four-star recruit from Dallas, intends to transfer after two seasons as a third-string linebacker for the Ducks. Wallace appeared in 15 games over two years, finishing with 13 tackles and three passes defended. He was pulled out of a redshirt year midway through the 2011 season after injuries to veteran Michael Clay and classmate Rodney Hardrick, and wasn't able to climb any higher on the depth chart in 2012. The Ducks graduate their two starting inside linebackers from the Fiesta Bowl championship team, Clay and Kiko Alonso. Hardrick, Derrick Malone and Rahim Cassell projected as the top candidates to replace them, having held more prominent roles than Wallace this past season, both on defense and special teams. Oregon recently added junior college inside linebacker Joe Walker, who signed a letter of intent in December and enrolled at the university this week. Walker, a sophomore with a redshirt year available, could be a candidate for the two-deep come fall, along with freshman Brett Bafaro, who redshirted this past season. Wallace, who did not appear in the Fiesta Bowl, has a redshirt year available, and thus could transfer to an FBS school, sit out a year and then have two years left to play. "We wish Anthony the best in his future endeavors and will attempt to assist him wherever he decides to pursue his education and football career,” UO coach Chip Kelly said in a prepared statement.
He was a 'big get' from the 2011 class, and he wasn't even on the 2-deep going into the spring at MLB. Wallace never bought into the conditioning program that Oregon is fanatical about, and players who were behind him in HS have surpassed him on the field via hard work. I wish Wallace well, but had DAT not committed in 2011, Wallace was probably the biggest get from that class, and he rarely saw the field at Oregon. I'm actually beginning to think that many players from Texas are highly-rated simply because they played in Texas. Recruiting is sooo overrated.
This is how I'm feeling as well. I was really getting into it during our big season three years ago, but it seems like none of the guys that were hyped in that class ended up doing anything. Well, I guess Lylerla and DAT have been awesome, but so many of the others were flops. I guess I've learned to temper my excitement.
