<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">After McDyess participated in a controlled scrimmage Wednesday, coach Don Chaney said the 29-year-old power forward could make his regular-season Knicks debut as early as tomorrow against the Nets in East Rutherford. McDyess' movements and Chaney's words removed six days from the most optimistic projections for the return of the team's top athlete.

McDyess came through his first "real" basketball practice without a scratch, twinge or doubt about the health of his left knee. "Overall, for the first day, it was great," he said. "I went through the whole practice, that made me feel good about myself. At first when I got out there, everything was moving fast. Then I got more comfortable with my wind. I just got comfortable with myself and comfortable on the floor."

Before Wednesday, McDyess had participated only in drills and some limited competition, always mindful of the knee that had endured a torn patella ligament (October 2001), a fractured cap (October 2002) and a bone graft (April).

From Phil Mushnick of the post:

    November 21, 2003 -- EQUAL TIME

WHAT the hey? Tuesday, Antonio McDyess, who has yet to play for the Knicks and has had three surgeries on his left knee, scrimmaged. Afterwards, McDyess and his coach, Don Chaney, said that while there were some positive signs, he's not quite ready to play in an NBA game, that he's still, oh, a week or two away.

That's what we heard and read.

But if a picture's worth a thousand words, what we saw told a far different story. MSG's "SportsDesk," Tuesday night, aired footage of McDyess playing in that day's scrimmage. He's close to ready? Closer to ready? How can that be? The man was limping.

McDyess wasn't profoundly dragging his leg, a la Willis Reed in the 1970 finals, but his movement was obviously labored. His lateral steps were deliberate and were followed by the delicate planting of his left foot. His ability to quickly cut - or defend against a quick cut - appeared significantly diminished.

I'm not a doctor but I know what I see. And I defy anyone to view that footage from Tuesday's practice then logically conclude what was so widely reported: That Antonio McDyess is either close - or getting closer - to resuming his NBA career. How can that be if he's limping?

For McDyess' sake and for the sake of Knick fans, especially season ticket holders, I hope I'm wrong, but the man's chance of playing basketball at close to his previous skill level seems impaired, if not impossible. And it was more than odd, it was downright weird that such hopeful words and such woeful pictures could be about the same story.

Me: So.... are we still expecting Dyess to save the Knicks?

Don Chaney needs to be dismissed imediatley he is a terrible coach and players on the floor display his coaching skills well. Knicks fans need to stop going to game leave the Garden enmpty. Dolan isn't going to fix things until he feels to hole in his wallet.
