i mean there was the largest foul differential of any game in the series and there weren't even intentional fouls at the end to factor in. so i assume there is outrage here at the large foul differential, right? in actuality, i thought the refs were fine tonight just as they were fine in game 4.
yeah, it looks like there is a thread about the refs, right here. they were fine tonight, they missed some calls on both ends, but they actually called the hand-checks and holds on both end of the floor, a nice change.
The refs still look like they ignore almost everything that happens around Yao Ming on the defensive end. That bump on Outlaw was criminally ignored. You know if Joel or Greg did that against Battier on the drive, it'd be an insta-and one.
Outside of the 4th quarter I thought it was pretty even, maybe even leaning a bit towards the Rockets favor. But I do admit that in the 4th quarter we got the benefit from the refs pretty decidedly. That's all that matters right?
The refs missed calls on both ends. We actually did a better job at not allowing the ball to get into Yao, which in turn allowed us to play good man defense.
Agree. I can't imagine the refs letting that go if that were Artest driving in on Joel or Oden in that situation. Admit it or not, Yao gets treatment from the refs.
like i said, i thought the refs were fine but based on what has been said here during the previous games in the series, something must have gone horribly wrong since one team was called for 24 fouls and the other team only called for 12.
Yeah, I can think of a couple things that have been going horribly wrong all series, so you're right. I'm glad you think the refs were fine tonight.
The refs let the Outlaw one go simply because Outlaw wasn't a pussy and didn't jump on the ground. Battier was leading break with only Outlaw back and realizes he is screwed... so he leans into him and then jumps on the ground. Foul. Honestly... I am glad the Blazers don't do that shit. Rudy does some... but for the most part the team doesn't spend a lot of time trying to draw fouls. They pay for it... becuase drawing fouls is the most effective play... but it is weak. Utah is the worst offender.
I think the Blazers were more aggressive tonight and thats why they got the calls. Also, there was some pretty dumb fouls finally called on Houston role players that were playing out of control (yeah, I'm talking to you Kyle Lowry) that upped the total of the fouls. Listening to the game on the Rockets radio network, they had nothing but good things to say about the refs, and these are guys that have a front row view of the action...
Stern the evil midget probably wants to extend this series to 7 games to maximize the number of games Yao Ming plays in.
We had two Spanish players that got to play a bit and that helped even out Yao's Chinese crowd. Stern wants and is pushing for an International league. May very well go the full 7 games.
I felt the Blazers got a little home cookin, but not a lot. It just seems weird to me that every time a team wins in this series, that the fouls seem to go 2 to 1, with the losing team obviously comitting the most.
There were a few plays last night where I thought to myself "That wasnt a foul on Houston" so yes Blazers got some home cookin.. and also a couple bogus calls too.. but had no effect on the game.. evens out IMO just like games 2,3, and 4. (and for the record.. I dont think Game 1 was the ref's fault)
Great thread.... really good stuff. Thanks for starting it, it's a really interesting subject. Just watch Adelman's presser last night and you'll get your fill of bad officiating talk.
1) Wafer didn't attack nearly as much this game. On one memorable play he got his shot blocked by the backboard! Never seen that before. So, he didn't put as much pressure on the officials as he has been. 2) They actually called fouls on Houston for mugging the Blazers. 3) In a demonstration of how lopsided the calls have been against the blazers, Lowry went crazy that he was actually called for fouls. He's been really aggressive on the offensive and defensive end this series, but he had no recognition that his "defense" was actually fouling. Only this game, they were called. It's a bizarre world they Kyle freaking Lowry is expecting superstar ref treatment. 4) In another demonstration of how lopsided the calls have been against the blazers, they showed an instant reply where a picked Battier grabbed Roy's arm and pullled it to keep Roy from going anywhere - he was called for a foul. What's so lopsided? He was livid that he was called for a foul when grabbing a guy's arm and pulling it back with all his might. Obviously, Battier is used to that being a fair and standard type of play. 5) Did the Blazers get away with a few - absolutely. Did the Rockets? Yes, they did. However, the refs actually called fouls in a normal manner, and the Rockets couldn't adjust - that more than anything is why they lost.
yeah, Shane being upset about that one was very strange. After they were done with the slo-mo replay clearly showing him fouling Roy, they cut back and he was still giving the ref an earfull... maybe he was complaining about something that happened the play before anyhoo, here's guessing things will revert to form game 6 STOMP
