In the last decade or so it seems like technological advancements have given birth to a lot of affordable RC devices. I recently came across the affordable Cheerson CX-10 nano copters, and after hearing everybody rave about them I ordered some as they seemed like a great inexpensive gift ($17 on Amazon). I've never flown quads myself, but it seems interesting and like the type of thing that will be a growing industry. It might not be a bad skill to have, and sure as hell looks fun. I had to order myself one after hearing everybody rave about them. It hasn't arrived yet, and I found myself researching other quad copters and seeing what people are doing with them. FPV (First person view) racing hasn't seemed to have caught on and become huge, but I have a feeling it will. I was amazed the first time I watched it - It looks like a blast, I thought about how I could see it becoming a recognized sport. It almost doesn't seem real at first, an amazing advancement in technology for sure. I guess some of the guys use iPad or other touch pad devices as screens, where others have modified glasses which project the view of the aircraft. They held the first ever Drone Nationals in California this year, but I never heard of it until now. There are definitely serious safety regulations that need to be followed when flying these things. I hope that as they become more mainstream people use them respectfully.
