Well as some of you may already know, I have just started work in my friends Dad's French restaraunt, well his Dad, his cousin, her boyfriend and the girl I work with are all French, they can speak English, but the girl I work with, her English isnt great, so I was wondering, does anyone on here know any French? Do you know any good websites where I can learn up on the basics?

It would make my job alot easier if I could talk to this girl when she doesnt understand what I'm talking about. I mean it hasnt been much of a problem yet, but I can tell that I will need to use it some time soon.

So yeah, if you can maybe post some common phrases, or know any good websites, please post them. And no joking around please.

I speak French and my girlfriend is fluent, naturally. I don't know if I can really help you know much on here myself, but you can find plenty of guides (kind of like a fold out map) where you live that give enough details on the basics that you'll need to know. They aren't expensive either, so no worries. I would not use online translations because those are good for nothing and 70% incorrect on their translations.

I should know french since my Dad was like a professor in it when he lived in Montreal, and my parents speak a type of Creole which is similar to French. I took French up until grade 10, but I was horrible. I ended up with a 57? mostly because we had lots of group stuff and one of my friends was super smart. I failed all my tests except two.

^ I took French until grade 9...while everyone took academic french and got 50's, I took applied french, mostly because it was the last year I was gonna take french, but also because it was only grade 9 and academic marks don't really count as much...I ended up with an 82 or somehting, but that was cause the class was so basic that it would have beena shame if I didn't get anything over 80.

Well, it's been like 3 years since I last took it so I don't really remember much..

    All I remember is

    Bien- good

    Tres Bien- very good

Bonjour, J'emepelle _____ *insert your name*...means, hello, my name is...

    Comme-Ci, Comme-Ca- So, so

I don't think these phrases will really help you all that much when talking to the girl about work...maybe if you're trying to impress her with french or something these could somewhat help, but otherwise they're pretty useless [IMG] Sorry dude. This is what happens when you pass French class by not doing homework and mostly cheating on the tests.

French classes in Canada (or at least in Ontario) are so useless. The students don't care. The teachers don't care. It's just a hurdle that we're supposed to go through. I just babelfish'd my way through it until Grade 9.

lol! Yeah I figure most kids do that in HS and Junior High. I didn't care much for other languages when I was around your age either. I just basically coasted and did what I could. Now I enjoy learning as many languages as I possible can. We all change as we get older.

Ok thanks so far guys, I found a good online guide through Google, it has audio translation with it, I asked her some stuff I learnt over night, and it seemed to go down pretty well. It's good too, because the website, by chance, happened to have most sentences I would need to use most, like "where is the broom?" etc.

Keep it coming though, want to learn as much as possible [IMG]
