The second week of the NCAA College football betting season wrapped up with some interesting results Saturday, which led to even more interesting outcomes the following day. Smaller schools provided upsets, contenders proved to be the opposite, and teams that didn’t even play somehow managed to lose credibility in the AP rankings. The NCAA football season always provides fans with some interesting perspective, and week two was no different from the past.

The week opened without many notable NCAAF betting surprises, with number-21 Auburn topping Mississippi State Thursday night, and favorites Temple, West Virginia, and Houston all prevailing before the weekend. The fact that the Mountaineers escaped with an overtime win against Marshall was a big relief for a school that would have definitely suffered a fall in the standings if they hadn’t gotten the win. Other teams were not so lucky.

Number-13 Virginia Tech fell to small division James Madison at home, making it consecutive weeks that the Hokies have failed against smaller schools, with their opening loss coming against Boise State in the Monday night game week one. With the Broncos and Dukes both prevailing over Virginia Tech, the trend continues of smaller teams managing to find ways to beat bigger schools. The Hokies have East Carolina at home next week, before traveling for back-to-back games against Boston College and North Carolina State. With just one ranked team left on the schedule, the potential was there for Virginia Tech to make some noise in the ACC-Coastal this season, but that is no longer looking like the case.

The number-10 Florida Gators have discovered a way to overcome struggles but remain relevant with a pair of wins over Miami of Ohio and South Florida State to open the season. The Gators started slow in both of those games but managed to pull out wins with strong second halves, a testament to the excellent job that head coach Urban Meyer and his staff have done to start off the post-Tim Tebow Era. Florida travels for the first time this week, heading to Tennessee to take on a Volunteers’ program with problems of their own. Florida has tough back-to-back online sports betting games against Alabama and LSU in a couple of weeks, and will need to be much better to prevent being embarrassed by those two teams.

The biggest story of week one however was the shift in attitude at the top. With the Hokies falling to James Madison, the luster of Boise State’s road win to open the season was almost entirely lost, and it was reflected in the AP standings as the Broncos lost all but one of their first-place votes. That support was delivered back to the two teams currently ranked first and second, with Alabama and Ohio State both getting due recognition after big statement wins. All ten of the teams ranked in the top ten in the national standings will take to the field this week, and it will be interesting to see how the AP rankings sort out after another big football betting week.
