When you look around the league, and see how hard it is build teams, you see guys like Kobe and KG bi*ch about team failures....and then you look at their contracts....and those contracts limiting a teams ability to bring in players...are these guys overly selfish....or not?
Yes, if guys like Kobe and Garnett really cared about bringing in talent, then they would take pay-cuts to free up come cap room. Just like Carter. Earlier this month, he was saying how much he wants to add a big man, and keep the Nets trio together, then the next day he was saying he will only accept a $20 million dollar contract. I know money is important, and it's hard to turn it down, but if you really cared about winning as much as you say you do, $ 5 million less wouldn't hurt your wallet that much. If I made league minimum, I would be one happy man...

They have to make money to set them selves up for retirement. But if they don't use their money in good ways or invest it thenyes, they are selfish.
It's not really selfish. I mean the market is out there for these guys to make that kind of money. If you were in there shoes, wouldn't you take $20 MIL even if it meant you were limiting your team's success. If I could sign a contract, knowing that I could financially secure my entire family for decades to come I would do it. When you discuss the money aspect of sports you sometimes have to look beyond the game itself. As much as we tend to not believe it, this is a job.
Well, selfish or not, some of these guys care more about playing for money instead of playing to win. They act like taking a $1 MIL or $2 MIL paycut when they're making upwards of $15-$20 MIL is a big lifestyle change. They should be putting that money away anyway.

The worst players in the league get enough money that should leave them with millions more than enough for retirement.

The ones on the practice rosters and the 4th-5th stringers of the world might be. But a majority of the players are not broke when they're done playing basketball PFF.
I remember in Shaq's book that Kenny Anderson had to have all his cars reposessed because he was broke. :no1:
And then you also look at Shaq's contract, and realize that he's won 4 championships...Not all guys who make a ton of money are selfish. And KG isn't selfish either, so I don't see what you mean there.

He wanted more money, so does every other superstar. Doesn't make him a selfish guy....He really wants help and I bet now he would take a pay cut if that meant bringing in a great veteran player.

I'm just bringing this up to spur debate.

Paycuts? Guys, the CBA doesn't allow for players or teams to restructure deals. The only way a player can do that is if he opts out and then signs again for less. God...I wish Kobe could be able to take a paycut.

This isn't the NFL where you can restructure your contracts, so the only way you get a paycut is if you're a free agent and sign for less than what the market dictates for you.And as for the whole "are NBA players broke before retirement" debate... most of them don't know how to manage their money. I recently read an article about how NBA players screw up financially, and you'd be surprised the kind of stuff they have to do in order to protect themselves and their money. If they hire a bodyguard, they need to get insurance, otherwise the player can be sued by the bodyguard if he is involved in a scuffle to protect the player, etc. NBA players are a business themselves, and unless they have some smart financial advisers taking care of their money without screwing them over (or if they know what they are doing themselves and can take care of it themselves), it's hard for players to manage their earnings. You also have to consider that people who make this much money are probably going to just spend as much money as they can. If you had millions of dollars, the first thing that would pop up into your mind is "what the F*ck am I going to buy?!?!?!," not "hm, how much should I save and what should I invest in and protect my financial security?"
