It seems that every article I read these days that involves talk of centres and power forwards includes rubbish from coaches saying something like "when other teams go small, we take off a big man to go with them." My question is why? The latest article was one about how Ilgauskas isn't going as well as in previous years and his minutes per game are down. But if you have a guy who is 7'3 and the other team goes small, why not exploit this and go tall yourself? To me it just seems that coaches are too reactionary. If a team goes small and you didn't have a plan for going small within the next period, I reckon you should stay big and work the ball inside on offence.
Ask the Spurs that question. It's much easier for a fast-paced offensive team to dictate the pace of the game and get the opposing team caught up in a game they're not suited for.
lol j-mac's avatar is funny. Anyway, Some teams probably aren't, like I don't think Yao is going to be benched for the sake of matchups.
It doesn't work thats why. I know it is totally different but last weekend in a fall league game we had one guy over 6' against a team with all monsters over 6'3, and we just ran circles around them. Speed wins over size almost every time, even in the nba.
There are only a few centers good enough to make keeping them in the game a priority these days. Most of the dominant big men are power forward and good swingmen who can play multiple positions are more readily available than good centers. It's just coaching to the talent level.
