The Arizona Diamondbacks pelted the Cardinals with 14 hits, three homers and 13 runs on Tuesday in a shelling at Chase Field. And that was the least of the Cardinals' concerns. Locked inside an exchange of big innings and big shots was the unusual difficulties of ace Chris Carpenter and two injuries to Cardinals' relievers. Bryan Augenstein will go on the disabled list Wednesday with a right groin strain. Brian Tallet could follow him with a fracture in his right hand, though club officials said they wanted to wait to make that decision after Tallet is re-evaluated. Since the injury is in Tallet's glove hand his ability to pitch may not be compromised if protection can be had for the hand. Arizona starter Armando Galarraga improved to 2-0 on the season and Carpenter slipped to 0-2. The Cardinals' righty entered the game with a 2.03 ERA and saw it balloon to 5.82 by the end of his four innings of work. Carpenter struggled with command throughout the game, and even some of his finer pitchers were looped to the outfield for base hits. Carpenter allowed eight runs on eight hits in four innings. Galarraga allowed three home runs, but all three were solo shots to minimize the damage. Arizona also hit three home runs in the game, but the three home runs created eight of the D-Backs' 13 runs. Justin Upton his a mammoth blast off Carpenter in the second inning. Upton's three-run shot cleared the seats in left-center field and landed infront of a burger stand on the concourse. The ball traveled an estimated 478 feet. Read more: http://www.stltoday.com/sports/base...cle_6c5c115c-6550-11e0-94fb-001a4bcf6878.html
