It looked more like an escape than a victory. But after 3 1/2 hours of crawling through a river of mistakes Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals weren't about to refrain from lifting their hands to the heavens in celebration.

Their 17-13 win over the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome contained more twists and turns than an Ozarks dirt road, and was just about as rough. But the Cardinals came through the other side with a clean 1-0 record, which beats the alternative.

"We did everything in the world to try to lose the game," outside linebacker Clark Haggans said. "I guess when you line up all the Xs and Os, you practice all week to try to win games; we're not in it for style points to try to make it look pretty."

The Cardinals fumbled seven times, and lost four, including two deep in Rams territory. They committed 10 penalties, and quarterback Derek Anderson completed barely 50 percent of his passes (22 of 41).
