from the description above in the news story, and it does seem plausible, it doesn't seem like the guy deserved to die but i can see why someone would shoot at the frat bros.
He ran to his car and drove away.. Oh wait, no, it says he ran to his car and retrieved a gun and shot four people. Not seeing a self-defense reason here, unless they were beating someone else that isn't mentioned.
Probably has family money. My guess, he'll plead guilty to 2nd degree manslaughter, MAYBE does 5 years in the clink and his parents will come to a settlement in a wrongful death suit with the other parents of the kid who died.
And that's why the shooters who off themselves do society a big favor. We don't have to fund their defense or continued existence, nor do we have to run the risk of them getting off lightly because some scumbag lawyer is looking to make a name for himself.
