"Right-hander Ian Kennedy didn't throw hard enough, and his secondary pitches weren't good enough - and besides, he already had failed once in the big leagues.

Or so was the perception when the Diamondbacks traded for him in December.

Part of a deal that also included more-established and harder-throwing pitchers in Edwin Jackson and Max Scherzer, Kennedy is six starts into his season, and guess who among them is having the best year?

Kennedy threw 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball Tuesday night to lead the Diamondbacks to a 1-0 win over Roy Oswalt and the Houston Astros, lowering his ERA to 3.65 as he continues to build evidence that he can succeed in the major leagues.

Justin Upton's solo home run in the third inning stood up as the game's only run as the Diamondbacks beat Oswalt for just the second time in 12 career starts.

As for Kennedy, it is, of course, far too early to draw too many conclusions - early both in the season and in the timetable of evaluating a trade - but so far the Diamondbacks have liked what they've seen from their young starter."
