Arrest of Jones will complicate Jags' plan at WR

A lot happened in one day to make it seem like the Jaguars will move from a left tackle to a receiver with the eight pick overall in the draft.

They signed veteran left tackle Tra Thomas early Friday.

Then, as first reported by Pro Football Talk, Matt Jones was arrested Monday and charged with possession of a controlled substance in Washington County, Arkansas. I spoke to a deputy at the jail who confirmed the arrest. Here's Jones' mug shot and details of the arrest, and here's an early report that he's also in violation of his parole.

The Jaguars have reason to be wary of first-round receivers after busting with Reggie Williams in 2004 and following him up with Jones in 2005. Williams is an unrestricted free agent who the team is not interested in re-signing. He also recently had a drug-related arrest.

Jones actually played pretty well last season, I thought, but is hardly the big-play threat the team was envisioning with the 21st pick.

He can be effective in short-yardage situations, especially if there is a deep threat on the field.

The Jaguars may be in position to draft such a player in Missouri's Jeremy Maclin now. But the odds of him taking the field with Jones aren't great with it looking like Jones will be facing serious legal trouble and the league discipline that comes with it.

Just as the “Days without an Arrest Meters” was hours away from getting back to double digits, Jaguars receiver Matt Jones has been arrested, again.

A reader has forwarded to us this link to the Washington County, Arkansas Sheriff’s office, which shows that a man named Matt Jones, a 25-year-old white male with brown hair and blue who stands six feet and five inches from the ground and weighs 205 pounds and having an address in Jacksonville, Florida, was arrested at 6:21 p.m. CDT for possession of a controlled substance.

Jones is listed on the Jags’ official web site as 6-6 and 216 pounds. He’s also 25.

We suppose there’s a chance that it’s not the same Matt Jones as the one from Arkansas who plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars, especially since a mug shot as of this posting has not yet been posted with the arrest information.

If it is Jones, he could be in big trouble with the NFL, and the law. Last year, he was arrested for felony cocaine possession, but agreed to enter a diversion program, which among other things requires him to stay out of trouble.

He also was suspended three games by the NFL.

So if the Matt Jones from Arkansas who plays for the Jags is the same Matt Jones of identical age and similar dimensions and Jacksonville address who was arrested within the past half hours in Arkansas, he’s got a big problem.

UPDATE: The mugshot is now posted. Yep, it’s him.

SECOND UPDATE: Jones also apparently is charged with violating the terms of his probation.

Though the web site of the Washington County, Arkansas Sheriff’s Department says that Matt Jones was busted for possession of a controlled substance, KFSM in Arkansas reports that Jones was jailed after admitting that he drank alcohol while golfing, in violation of the diversion program into which he was placed to resolve felony cocaine possession charges.

Judge Mary Ann Gunn reportedly gave Jones a choice between seven days in jail and entry into a six-week residential drug program.

That said, there’s a conflict between this report and the content of the Sheriff’s Department’s web site, which strongly implies that Jones is being held on $150,000 bond (and thus could get out right now if he posted it).

So stay tuned for more on this one. Either way, Jones did something incredibly stupid; the only question is whether he did it with alcohol or something else.

UPDATE: Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union reports that, indeed, Jones landed in jail after testing positive for alcohol in violation of his plea deal. He initially opted for the six-week drug treatment program, but then changed his mind after the judge suggested that he consider the potential impact of the treatment program on his football career. It remains to be seen whether the positive alcohol result triggers any penalties for Jones under the league’s substance-abuse policy.
