He joins on a five year deal worth about £150,000 a week plus incentives, not only making him the highest earner on the club but the most expensive German player ever and the third biggest signing in English football history. Özil, 24, is arguably the best #10 in the world. He's expected to play as a second striker/central midfielder and along with Spanish national Santi Cazorla will create one of the best passing and dribbling tandems outside of Spain. Özil's arrival wasn't on the list of Arsenal's biggest needs (striker and defender coming first) but the opportunity to sign him was one manager Arsene Wenger couldn't pass up. Arsenal tried and failed to add another striker this window, attempting at the last minute to snap up Demba Ba from Chelsea on loan. Predictably, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was reluctant to send Ba to Arsenal when the two clubs should be competing at every level this season. Arsenal also signed capped Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Vivano (loan), French midfielder Mathieu Flamini (free), and French foward Yaya Sanogo (free) during this transfer period.
