Following the busiest deadline day for Arsenal in I don't know how long, the dust has settled and the Gunners have reloaded the team with several veteran players in hopes of salvaging not just the season but their tarnished reputation as one of England's top clubs. Who we got/what it cost 1. Park Chu-Young, Monaco, striker/winger (£1.8m) 2. Andre dos Santos, Fenerbache, attacking left fullback (£6.2m) 3. Per Mertesacker, Werder Bremen, centre back (£8m) 4. Yossi Benayoun, Chelsea, attacking midfielder/second striker (loan) 5. Mikel Arteta, Everton, attacking midfielder (£10m) Who we sold/lent out 1. Armand Traore, QPR (£1.5m) 2. Henri Lansbury, West Ham United (loan) 3. Gilles Sunu, Lille (£1m) 4. Joel Campbell, Lille (loan) 5. Nicklas Bendtner, Sunderland (loan)
New (healthy) lineup: Szczesny Sanga - Mertesacker - Vermaelen - dos Santos Song - Wilshere - Arteta Walcott - RVP - Gervinho Certainly an improvement from the team that lost last weekend. This week is a by-week for international duty so hopefully we'll have this full lineup v Swansea next weekend!
Fair enough- we are not exactly compensated for losing Nasri and Fabregas. These new players are bolstering a team that still needs an infusion of star power to compete with the upper echelon in the EPL. But these deals do help us cope for the time being. Hoping we'll go after a blue chip player next summer. Didn't expect one this late on this year.
Uncertain whether the publicized transfer fees are accurate (probably to within 10%), but if we spent £25m, that means we still have £50m for next summer (or even January), right? Nice.
hmm hadnt thought of that. Hopefully by that time the Board will soften their stance on Wages. I'd say save it for the summer unless some big time people are available in January.
January is usually for emergency signings so you are right, odds are if money from that is spent it will be next summer on a future piece or two.
From what I'm hearing Santos is a good offensive fullback but not such a good defensive player. To me it seems like he has been brought on to give us cover while Gibbs is (often) injured but maybe not be our default first-choice at the position otherwise. Gibbs has seldom looked the part of a starting eleven EPL fullback but Wenger's faith in his young players is unshakable. Probably said the same thing about Song not less than three years ago.
Lansbury had two goals and two assists and Chamberlain had two assists against Azerbaijan. Bendtner has said that he will never play for Arsenal again. Umad? Also, a deal for Hazard was apparently agreed during the transfer window but Lille couldn't find a replacement in time (Joe Cole?). Wenger is confident that we will land Hazard for £28m in January. That will be a huge boost for us and will destroy our previous transfer record.
Lille's fans hate us now. Might make it trickier for their management team to convince the supporters selling us their best player is good business.
Because Wenger thought he would be a perfect fit for Chelski apparently... dude looks like a killer signing.
