As expected, John Torchetti is heading to Atlanta.

After helping guide the Chicago Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup in 49 years, Torchetti was officially named associate coach of the Thrashers on Thursday. Torchetti will work alongside Craig Ramsay, who was named the team's coach last month.

"The entire organization would like to wish John well with the Thrashers and all of his future endeavors," Chicago GM Stan Bowman said in a statement. "We appreciate all of his work during his three years on staff, including being a part of our Stanley Cup Championship team."

Torchetti, 45, has also coached in Tampa Bay (1999-2001), Florida (2002-04), Los Angeles (2005-06) and Chicago (2007-08 to 2009-10). The Thrashers will mark the fourth NHL team which Torchetti and GM Rick Dudley have worked together.

"I've known John for several years and he is a highly-talented and extremely knowledgeable individual,"Dudley said. "He is an excellent coach who will strengthen Craig's staff and we're fortunate to have him as part of our organization."

Torchetti was an assistant coach under Joel Quenneville in Chicago, which improved in wins and points each season since his arrival in 2007. The Blackhawks reached the Western Conference Finals in 2008-09 and captured the Stanley Cup last month.

"John is a dedicated individual who will be an invaluable resource to me and a significant asset for our players,"Ramsay said. "His strengths compliment mine and match up well with what we will be striving to accomplish."
