"The backup goalie was in, a disheartening result had happened not even 24 hours before and the venue was Joe Louis Arena. In the hall named after the famous boxer, the tale of the tape did not favor the visiting Avalanche on Tuesday night against the Red Wings.

Your final score from the Joe: Avs 5, Wings 4 in a shootout, a thriller that saw Colorado overcome three deficits.

Brandon Yip scored the lone goal of a shootout that went six rounds, and David Jones scored two goals, including one that tied it up late in regulation.

"We were in that situation a number of times last season, when we were down. But we've got a good young team, we work hard and we know we're never out of it," said Jones, who scored his first goals of the season.

The Avs, usually on the wrong side of the shot totals, outshot the still star- studded Wings 38-28 — though the number of truly dangerous scoring chances might have favored the Wings. No matter the chances, Avs coach Joe Sacco saluted his team's work, which came one night after a 4-2 loss in Philadelphia.

"I thought the guys responded with a terrific effort," Sacco said. "To get 38 shots on a team like that in their building was good."

Sacco mixed up all four of his lines for the game, dropping TJ Galiardi from the first line to the fourth and skating Matt Duchene at one point with Cody McLeod and Daniel Winnik.

Things worked on this night. Jones, playing often with Yip and Ryan O'Reilly, scored a picture-book backhander at 11:24 to tie it 4-4. The goal came soon after John-Michael Liles' turnover at the blue line led to Patrick Eaves' short-handed goal at 7:52 — Colorado's second official short-handed goal against in two nights. Prior to Jones' goal, O'Reilly and Winnik scored to get the Avs back from a 3-1 deficit."
