With a competition as big as the Champion's league it seems that missing out on a place in the next round just on away goals must be agonising. I think having this rule encourages a less exiting style of play; teams play with less freedom at home for fear of conceding goals. This is not what supporters come to see and it lessens the fun of the competition. Three out of eight matches were decided by away goals in this round of the competition and it seems wrong that three teams should have managed to draw on aggragate and still not have a chance of going through. It also seems wrong that if you have earnt a high scoring draw at home then it is almost as bad is losing 1-0. Teams should not be punished for drawing at home. I propose that the away goals rule should be abolished and extra time be played instead. Perhaps having golden or silver goal might be a good idea if matches drag on to long. You could argue that this gives an unfair advantage to the team playing at home in the second leg but that it is just the luck of the draw. Overall I think that this is a much fairer proposal and would result in better football being played all round.
You wouldnt be saying that if you were going to win on away goals v Porto. So yeh, take back what you say.
The Away goal rule gives the smaller teams like Lille and Celtic a more chance to go through to the last 8.
