Just heard a radio report that Vin Baker has officially been waived by the Celtics. What a sad turn of events for Vin.

It isn't over 'till it's over; the Celtics will still need to deal with the Player's Association in this matter, and there is a slim chance that an arbitration hearing could go Baker's way. I just want them to get rid of him as soon as possible.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics put Vin Baker on waivers Friday, the next step in releasing the suspended former all-star from a contract that would pay him $36 million over the next 2? seasons.

Baker was suspended indefinitely on Jan. 23 for violating a testing program he agreed to last season when he left the team to check into alcohol rehab. He missed his 10th consecutive game on Thursday night, triggering a clause in the agreement that would allow the Celtics to release him.

By placing him on waivers, the Celtics initiated the process of terminating his contract. Unless another team claims him before Wednesday morning -- a slim possibility -- they can release him.</div>

Sad turn of events indeed. Vin Baker was the front-runner for MIP at the beginning of the season, and made the decision easier for the Celtics to trade Antoine Walker. Now he's been placed on waivers by the team who tried to support him through his substance abuse problems. He now stands to lose $36M. How soon before he's no longer in the league?

He'll get picked up by the Knicks for a much lesser amount. The Celtics save some cap room, maybe they'll go after Kobe this offseason.

Teams have to stop signing bad/troublesome players.

I heard that the Celtics wouldn't let him play in the 10th game of that stretch. From a human resources standpoint this is a case for unlawful dismissal...he could fight it and win

    Very sad

He was a joy to watch with the Bucks not that long ago, turning into another Shawn Kemp situation.

That's what I've been saying! Not about the Knicks, now that they have Isiah that won't happen, but about Kobe! He would fit in so well with the Celtics, he could really carry them. They would have to trade Pierce, but I think he probably wants to be traded now anyway, since his coach quit and all. Also, Boston fans really have no problem bringing in a better player for a fan favorite. Look at the whole A-Rod/Nomar situation. I would love to see Kobe in a Celtics uniform next season. Actually, I can't even picture it...

Going from the Lakers to the Celtics? He could do that to piss off the Lakers but I think Magic Johnson would kill Kobe before that ever happens.

    Wishful thinking Celtics fans

Hmm, Memo may have something here. A Bryant-Pierce trade might be a solution for both teams. Paul would love to come back home and play for his favorite childhood team, and apparently Kobe is leaning towards opting out anyway. So why not? If I knew I was going to lose Kobe and receive nothing in return I would definitely do a deal like that.

Why would Boston do it though? They have no idea if Kobe is gonna sign with them anyways.

I wasn't saying trade Pierce for Kobe, I was saying just sign Kobe and trade Pierce for someone good. They could wait until after the season to sign Kobe and then trade Pierce afterwards. Probably couldn't tell from my baseball reference, but I meant they should go out and get the better player, and then deal with Pierce.

Maybe they can leave Pierce and move him to small forward. Welsch can move to point guard and make the Celtics' backcourt BIG. Ricky Davis can then be moved.

He played so well during the begining of the year, I thought he had a turn around...guess not.

I see, that would be the best case scenario for the Celtics. But from the Lakers standpoint, I highly doubt they would let that happen. If the Lakers catch wind that they're going to lose Kobe to the Celtics they'll either ask for Pierce in a trade, or force Boston's hand by shopping Kobe to other teams.

I agree with OG, the lakers would never move Kobe to the Celts....ain't gonna happen. I really doubt Kobe would sign with the Celts in the first place, its like me saying for the Raptors to make a run at Kobe. Ain't gonna happen

Yeah, just like Atlanta thinking that they have a shot at Kobe, that's funny. Kobe doesn't want to be on the east coast anyway, his first choice would be to remain in LA. But if not, Phoenix or San Antonio are the only other logical destinations for him. I still think the Clippers and the Suns are the front-runners for his services next season....As for Baker, somebody will pick him up. I wouldn't be surprised to see a team like Toronto or possibly even Detroit make a run at him.

LMAO....Atlanta thinks they have a chance at Kobe? I laughed out loud when I read that one. Reminds me of that thread about being the best player on the worst team. Again, I agree OG that Kobe is staying in the sunny West either with the Clips or Suns if he doesn't re-sign with the Lakers.

BTW If Baker is signed by Toronto I'm gonna puke. Its highly unlikely because Toronto likes solid citizens (for real) for players
