Having seen Roman Pavlyuchenko at close quarters in Wales’ World Cup qualifier against Russia, Gareth Bale is confident his new Tottenham team-mate has what it takes to cut it in The Premier League.

Pavlyuchenko arrives at White Hart Lane to a depleted Spurs frontline that has been shorn of both Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov over the summer months.

The Russia striker, who shot to notoriety against England in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, will now be vying for a place in Juande Ramos’ first-team plans with the likes of Darren bent and Fraizer Campbell.

Ramos forked out £14 million – less than half of the fee he received from Manchester United for Berbatov – but Bale is sure that it will prove to be money well spent.

"He was up front on his own [for Russia against Wales and played well," said Bale.

"He held the ball up well, looked lively and obviously scored the penalty against us in the first half. Tottenham fans certainly have something to look forward to.

"I spoke to him before and after and he's looking forward to playing for Spurs."

Bale missed a penalty in the 2-1 defeat to Guus Hiddink’s side, while Pavlyuchenko did find the net from the spot.

Bale expects Pav to earn his Spurs

Gareth Bale has predicted big things from Roman Pavlyuchenko after being on the receiving end of Spurs' new hitman while on international duty.

Pavlyuchenko scored from the penalty spot as Russia beat Wales 2-1 in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.

Spurs manager Juande Ramos forked out £14million to replace Dimitar Berbatov with Pavlyuchenko - and Bale was impressed by his all-round performance, saying: "He was up front on his own and played well.

"He held the ball up well, looked lively and obviously scored the penalty against us in the first half. Tottenham fans certainly have something to look forward to.

"I spoke to him before and after and he's looking forward to playing for Spurs."

Bale, who missed a penalty against Russia, played in both Wales' World Cup qualifiers but insisted he is "fresh and as good as ever" ahead of Aston Villa's arrival at White Hart Lane on Monday night.

Pavlyuchenko and fellow deadline-day signing Vedran Corluka enjoyed their first day of training at Spurs Lodge on Friday and are in line to make their club debuts on Monday.

Corluka, who played in Croatia's 4-1 defeat by England on Wednesday, is set to slot straight into the Spurs back four as cover for the injured Alan Hutton at right-back.
