    JOSE JUAN BAREA EARNING RECOGNITION.

Sports Illustrated, a nationally respected magazine, announced Friday that Jose Juan Barea has been selected as one of the top 10 point guards in the country.

Barea, the former Miami Christian star who is set to play his senior season at Northeastern University, averaged 22.2 points and 7.3 assists last season. He was in the top 10 in the nation in both categories, the first player to accomplish that feat since 1998.

In fact, of the point guards on Sports Illustrated's list, only one - UConn's Marcus Williams (7.8) averaged more assists than Barea. No point guard outscored Barea.

One other thing about the list: At least three of the players are considered more shooting guards than point men: Taquan Dean of Louisville, Mardy Collins of Temple and Gerry McNamara of Syracuse.

    Here is Sports Illustrated's list:

    1 - Dee Brown, Illinois, 5-11 senior

    2 - Daniel Gibson, Texas, 6-2 sophomore

    3 - Rajon Rondo, Kentucky, 6-1 sophomore

    4 - Gerry McNamara, Syracuse, 6-2 senior

    5 - Marcus Williams, UConn, 6-3 junior

    6 - Darius Washington, Memphis, 6-1 sophomore

    7 - Mardy Collins, Temple, 6-5 senior

    8 - Taquan Dean, Louisville, 6-3 senior

    9 - Carl Krauser, Pitt, 6-2 senior

10 - Jose Juan Barea, Northeastern, 6-0 senior
