Benítez: Beating Marseille Is About Glory, Not Money

QUOTE

Rafa Benítez wants Liverpool to beat Marseille and progress to the next round of the Champions League in search of glory rather than financial gain for the club.

The Liverpool boss is due to hold talks with American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett this week about the club's plans for the future.

While Benítez and the two chairmen have publicly aired their differences over transfer policy, the Spanish manager is focussed on succes on the pitch when his side travel to the Stade Vélodrome.

"Sporting achievement is more important than the finance. A club like Liverpool is based on winning trophies. If we do that, the money will come," Benítez said.

"The Champions League is worth a lot of money but you can make money in other areas as well.

"If you play one or two matches in Asia, you can make as much money but the fans won't be excited. So the Champions League for us is about the football."

Benítez has already enjoyed phenomenal success in Europe during his time at Anfield as he led the club to the trophy in 2005 and then again to the final last season.

After looking set to make an early exit from the competition this season, the Reds have recorded two crucial wins and must now win in Marseille to qualify for the first knockout phase.
