After losing punter Kevin Huber to a season-ending injury Sunday night, the Cincinnati Bengals officially placed Huber on injured reserve Tuesday and signed free agent punter Shawn Powell to take over for him.

Powell comes to Cincinnati after having been released by the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 4, one day after Cleveland Browns return specialist Travis Benjamin took one punt for a touchdown and was a Powell tackle away from breaking another. Signed by the Bills in 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of college, Powell hadn't played for any other team.

A consensus All-America selection at Florida State, Powell led the nation his senior season in net punting with a 47.0 average. In two seasons with the Bills, he averaged 44.7 yards per punt and 37.1 net punting yards. He only appeared in five games with Buffalo this season. As he has done since college, Powell also will be tasked with holding for the Bengals on field goals and point-after attempts. Coach Marvin Lewis said Tuesday that Powell will pick up Huber's duties as the team's primary holder.
