My wife, her parents and I are all making lists of our favorite films over the past 2 decades. I'm going to buy DVD's of all films on the lists missing from our current collections. So here's my list for the 1990's: Fargo Dark City Pulp Fiction Usual Suspects City of Lost Children The Shawshank Redemption Buffalo '66 Groundhog Day 6th Sense 12 Monkeys
Clear and Present Danger Mission Impossible Independence Day Clueless Demolition Man Usual Suspects Menace II Society ah hell.... http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/movie-pages/movie_90s.html
Schindler's List Silence of the Lambs Saving Private Ryan American Beauty Shawshank Redemption Braveheart Thin Red Line Fight Club Jackie Brown L.A. Confidential American History X Lion King Toy Story Toy Story 2 Green Mile Donnie Brasco
I don't know why, but I've always been fine with the idea of stealing music, but not movies. Completely illogical when I sit here and think about it. Not that I'd steal music. Ahem.
Hmmm. Those ones are making me re-think my list. Pretty hard to argue that 12 Monkeys is superior to Silence of the Lambs or American Beauty.
If I had to pick one favorite it'd have to be this gem:
Schindler's List Dumb & Dumber Quiz Show Pulp Fiction The 6th Sense American Beauty Fight Club Groundhog Day Dark City L.A. Confidential Rushmore The Truman Show The Shawshank Redemption Waiting For Guffman
Good call. Wes Anderson's movies are my favourites, and I think he reached even higher levels with later movies, but this is a definite '90s pick for me.
Sorry about that. I should've clarified. I am trying to finalize a top 10. It's getting harder the longer this thread goes.
Pulp Fiction is my best film of the decade. Usual Suspects I think has always been a good, but not truly great film. It never was in any of my "Top 10" lists. I guess I didn't like it as much as some people. So often those "gimick" movies don't wear as well. I think over time that has been born out. It has faded. Sixth Sense too. Whereas other movies you have on your list like Pulp Fiction, Shawshank, Groundhog Day, and Fargo hold up very well upon repeated viewings. Here would be my Top 10 of the 90's of Holywood movies you actually want to watch over and over again: Pulp Fiction (All-time Top Movie) Goodfellas (All-time Top Movie) Shawshank (All-time Top Movie) Silence of the Lambs Unforgiven Fargo The Matrix Forest Gump Terminator 2 LA Confidential And for Movie Night with the small kids: Toy Story Lion King
I see you point, somewhat. Some gimmicks wear thin quickly for me--particularly fight sequences and car chases. But surprise twists don't really wear out. Even though I know it's going to happen, there are scenes in Dark City, Sixth Sense and The Usual Suspects that so shocked me the first time that I find it really easy to go back and remember. I think it's because most films are so terribly predictable--even a lot of the ones I listed (Groundhog Day, Buffalo 66, Shawshank Redemption). I have an immense amount of respect for a film that can truly surprise me. You call it a gimmick, I call it a treat.
btw--some damned nice picks, Masbee. I gotta figure out what to cut out to add Unforgiven. The only two on your list I really question are The Matrix and T2. Had the Matrix never had sequels, I might agree with you. But I'm afraid it's legacy is stained by two horrible sequels. It may not be fair, but what can I do? Every time I watch the original I can't help but think about the wretchedness of the sequels, and it ruins the experience. T2 was a great action film, and I might've agreed with you when I was 10 years younger. But anymore I find it hard to rate almost any action film that high. Metabolism must be slowing or something.
Rushmore is one of those movies I've been meaning to see forever. Given that you liked Dark City (almost nobody I know besides me puts it on a "Best of the 90's" list) I'm going to go and buy it.
