Bierhoff: Financial Crisis Will Hit Bundesliga

German national team manager Oliver Bierhoff believes that the current world financial crisis may is bound to have a detrimental affect on German football.

The former international striker, who now helps oversee the German national side, is of the opinion that the Bundesliga could be in danger of losing some very important sources of income.

The current global financial situation is quite unstable and with stock markets in a volatile state, the German league is set to suffer according to Bierhoff.

"When you go into a recession, and I am assuming we are probably in one, then football will also be affected" he said.

"Clubs still need people to go to the stadia and buy tickets, other consumables and pay to see games on pay-TV, and if that slows down, then it gets harder.

"It may also put some big companies off who may have been considering investing in football, but will put those thoughts on ice now."

The German domestic league is already in a state of unrest after the Office of Fair Trading ruled against a potential TV deal which would have seen broadcaster Sirius pay €500 million for the rights to the Bundesliga.

The German Football League (DFL) now have to seek a new investor, but it is believed that they will fail to achieve a similar sized bid.
