He was invited to participate in UFC 8 on short notice and wasn't really training for fighting at the time. A Kuk Sool Won blackbelt, he cemented his status as one of the pioneers of MMA in his very first fight, locking a hapless John Herrera in a crucifix and nearly breaking his skull with piston-like elbows to the temple. Gary would go on to fight 47 times in MMA and 36 times in kickboxing. He was also an accomplished arm wrestler and strongman. Sadly towards the end of his career Gary was well past his days of competing but continued to get into the ring in order to pay his bills. He has lost 19 of 20 competitions with the other result being a draw. The end of his career was marred by a spat with K-1/FEG who took nearly a year to pay him for his final kickboxing bout--paying him only after he pleaded with fans on MMA.tv to help him out--and when they did they shorted him nearly $10,000. Live long and prosper Gary!
