<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">PHILADELPHIA -- It?s nearly August, and August is nearly basketball season, and there was Billy King Wednesday at the PCOM Center in his most familiar pose, cell phone to his left ear, head bowed, plotting. Plenty can and has been said about the Sixers? president and general manager, mostly positive, some not. On one point, though, no one can quarrel: King does not sit and allow the NBA to happen, but rather is the aggressor, the pace-setter, the deal-maker, the basketball-roster stylist.

He?ll hire a coach, then fire him months later. He?ll not allow a draft to come and go without some activity. He?ll make a deal at a trade deadline. His next cell-phone carry-over minute will be his first. All of which is to wonder, what he is up to, and when will the next aftershock arrive?

Technically, King already has gone atomic in this offseason, firing one coach without overwhelming cause, then making the popular hire of Maurice Cheeks. He feels the 76ers will benefit, and, well, they just might. Other than that, though, the offseason has been strangely non-King-like. Minor draft-day shuffling found him with a high school guard unlikely to help win a game before Allen Iverson?s No. 3 is retired. Then there was Tuesday, and a mini-event, a tryout of 6-9 injury-prone free agent forward Chris Crawford, a former Atlanta Hawk who hadn?t played since an Oct. 12 knee injury.</div>
