Artest is expected to make about 5mil this season so salaries must match; Bird probably won't find a player of equal value for the same salary but he might be able to unload some salaries. Artest also has a poor attitude and the rumors are the Pacers covered it up and are trying to get rid of him. This lowers his value if all that's been said is true.
