    What is the purpose of the horizontal black strip on the left shoulder of NBA players' jerseys?

    Usually it's a tribute to someone close in some way or another, that has passed away. Like when Red died, the Celtics added the black stripe to their jerseys.

    Or atleast that's what I thought. If every team has one, then maybe I'm wrong.
