<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Red Sox's designated hitter David Ortiz is injured and out of the Sox's lineup for at least month, if not longer. Naturally, Sox fans are uneasy.

Whenever a Major League club is in need of a DH, the first name that is unavoidably mentioned is the unemployed all-time home run king Barry Bonds. However, Barry can stop sitting by the phone because a club source told Boston Herald writer Michael Silverman that the Red Sox will not be calling.

The source indicated that the team does not feel Bonds would be a good "fit" in Boston. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein told the Herald that the team will look at internal options to fill the void made by Ortiz's absence.</div>

    Personality conflict.

The team is as cohesive a unit as any in sports today. Bonds is a distraction waiting to happen for a team that will have enough of that when Schilling's mouth comes back from the DL. Bonds' sour demeanor just does not fit with the Sox and should not be in the Boston club house. Its not the Kevin Millar/Johnny Damon band of idiots that won the Series in 04, but the team is as tight as that group and Bonds would disrupt that significantly.

And he's not worth the money he would demand to the Sox. While Ortiz is out, the DH position can be rotated to give Lowell, Youkillis, Drew, and Ramirez days off from defensive duties.

I will cordially invite every member of S2 to my home for a ceremonial burning of Red Sox memorabilia if and when Barry Bonds signs a contract with the Red Sox.

This is one of the reasons why the Rays didnt give a shot at Bonds. They didnt want the media scrunity to affect the young players, and it worked out well for the Rays. Instead of Bonds, they decided to stick with Cliff Floyd at DH, who is similar to Bonds without the media coverage.

I think that Boston's Defense is now better with Ortiz out because Manny goes to the DH, having Crisp in CF, Ellisbury in LF and Drew in right, the outfield defense just got a little better.

Theo is managing this the wrong way. He should act like he is interested so that the Yankees will sign Bonds to keep him from going to the Red Sox.

these opinions that you have expressed are based on a fraud perpetrated by the Bonds-hating media. For instance, the idea that he'd "cost too much," when Bonds has never indicated what salary he'd demand--the $10 million figure that has been thrown around has been entirely made up by the media. Thre's also no indication that Bonds is a terrible teammate. The media despises him, but you'd be hard-pressed to find teammates that have said negative things about him.

Anyway, the media is just toeing the company line--MLB is blackballing him, and the press is just going out of their way to justify it, instead of questioning it.

The other thing to consider here is that Ortiz isn't expected to be out for a long time. A significant financial investment to cover 4 to 6 weeks of injury and rehab just does not make sense. The Bonds-$10 million tag might be a falsehood, but I don't think he'd sign for two million either. He's not a defensive player for a team that already has the best DH in the league. Despite Ortiz' awful April, he hit .318 with 8 homers in May. Bonds just does not make any sense for this team.

Use Ortiz' time off to move Sean Casey and Coco Crisp in and out of the lineup. Youkilis, Lowell, and Casey can split among 1b and 3b time around and Ramirez, Crisp and Ellsbury in LF or CF.

@Dumpy: While it is true that Bonds has never mentioned how much he would ask for to DH for a season or two, his past behavior makes it pretty clear how highly he thinks of himself, and thus how much money he would want and what kind of team player he is. Comments like (excuse me for any inaccuracy in quoting: I saw the comment on TV a while ago), "Once I pass Hank people are going to be talking about me, not him." That's just one example out of many (read even a summary of Love Me, Hate Me, which is based on hundreds of interviews who have played with and otherwise been involved with Bonds) that demonstrate his extreme arrogance and ego. He's had countless run-ins with teammates in the past, so there's no reason to think things would be any different in Boston, and his arrogance and pride about being the homerun king would never allow him to take a less-than-premium salary.

He screwed himself by passing Hank so early. He'd have been better off being a few homers shy, and getting the homerun record and 3000 hits in one season.

In my humble opinion, this is the opinion of the MLB front office, which has been promoted unabashedly by the mainstream media. I've NEVER read about a run-in between Bonds and a teammate, in this era where teammates fight with each other all the time. You just can't tell me that he is the biggest asshole in the major leagues. That is just ridiculous. Is he any worse than, say, Milton Bradley? And again, you are just making assumptions about the salary he would demand. The point is that no team has apparently even approached him to ask him about it.

He's a better fit for the Patriots seeing as they're both cheaters.
