QUOTE

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Jets helped create this monster, and now they must face their handiwork.

Three months after blowing the whistle on the Patriots to kick-start what has become the most relentless, dominant, take-no-prisoners march in NFL history, the Jets get to experience what the rest of the league has tasted virtually every Sunday since that fateful September day.

The Patriots aren’t just beating teams, they’re embarrassing them. No one is safe. Not Hall of Fame Redskins coach Joe Gibbs (52-7) and the Redskins. Not Dick Jauron (56-10) - whom Patriots coach Bill Belichick professes to admire - and the scrappy Bills.

And least of all, not Eric Mangini. One year after leading the Jets to a surprise playoff berth and subsequent loss to the Pats, Mangini blew the whistle on his former coach.

The Camera-gate scandal followed, costing the Patriots a first-round pick, Belichick $500,000 and a recent dynasty much of its luster. The Patriots managed to bury the scandal by pummeling all in their path en route to a 13-0 record, but a taint lingers.

“What is Spy-gate?” Jets receiver Laveranues Coles said. “I don’t know anything about it. It doesn’t mean anything to me personally.”

He was lying, of course. But if he didn’t know, he’ll find out soon enough. It could be a very long afternoon for the Jets on Sunday.

“Anytime people try to attack you, you feel like your back is against the wall,” receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. “Anything like that adds fuel to the fire, but I don’t think it has any impact on what they’re trying to accomplish this year. They’re basically focused on winning a Super Bowl. Anyone who tries to take that away from them is paying for it.”

Deep down, Mangini must know what his squad is in for. He coached under Belichick, ran drills with Rodney Harrison and is keenly aware of how expertly the Patriots turn even the tiniest slights into affronts against humanity.

“Knowing Rodney and Bill and all the different people in there, what they’re focused on is the next opponent and what they have to do to prepare for that opponent,” Mangini said. “I appreciate that. That’s the important thing to always do, is to figure out what you have to do to get ready for that next game. I’m sure that’s what they’re focusing on.”

It’s a near-certainty the Pats are focused on more than preparing for the Jets. They want to humiliate them. The Jets’ only chance at history will be if they prevail.

“You’ll have to tell me what kind of history we’d be making,” Coles said. “Last I checked, a 3-10 team couldn’t do too much.”

How about denying the Pats perfection?

“That’s for them,” he said. “It wouldn’t make a difference to us.”

Coles was asked if it appears the Patriots have been playing angry.

“Not that I know of,” he said. “I haven’t paid attention to detail to see if they’re angry or not. They wear helmets, so it’s hard to tell. If you can tell they’re angry, you’ve got me on that one.”

A subplot all week and even after the game will be the relationship between the two head coaches. Mangini yesterday reiterated that he considers Belichick a mentor, though he stopped short of calling him a friend. Back in Foxboro, Belichick told reporters, “I have a lot of respect for the Jets players,” with nary a mention of his former pupil.

That would seem to be directly tied to Camera-gate, but Mangini doesn’t think so.

“It hasn’t affected anything that I’ve said or felt,” he said. “Nothing has changed for me, and it won’t change.”

That’s easy for him to say. His players are going to be the ones feeling the heat if the Patriots decide to pour it on.

They can only hope the Pats don’t carry a grudge so far that it obscures their primary objective.

“I know from their history that their goal is winning the Super Bowl,” Cotchery said. “They know what they’re capable of doing. Their motivation every year is the Super Bowl. This year is no different.”

Read again and you'll understand it better.

The Jets and Mangini made Bill angry, made Brady angry, made the whole team angry because they acussed them of something that every single team does, every single coach tries to find ways to get an advantage, whether its fair or not.

Patriots shouldn't have gotten that fine, it was a mistake by the league. And Patriots are proving it that they don't need to cheat to beat all the records in the NFL.

Where's your proof that every team in the league does it? You guys keep badgering me for proof in the "NFL wants the Patriots to win" thread. The Patriots broke the rules and they deserved the fine. If anything the team got off easy. Belicheck should have been suspended.

Oh yeah sure and the team should have been banned from playing in the NFL....why? Just because you hate them.

You're the only one that brings the cheating every single time the patriots win.

And yeah I don't have proof but its common sense that every team either has cheated, has tried, will try, and will cheat in the future. You don't need proof for that.

This is going to be an a$$ whoopin of epic proportions. I am just glad their is some measure of respect between the Pats & phins players. I could say the same about the interaction amongst fans, but...

I have learned 1 thing this season. Belichick is alot like Bruce Banner; You would not like him when he's angry. Belichick mad! Pats run up score! Puny Jets. Pats smash!

Banned? A multiple game suspension would have been appropriate. Nothing personal.

Cheaters should be dealt with, not ignored. Who raised you to justify cheating?

I'm not justifying cheating, I'm simply saying that every team or coach has tried to cheat and will cheat if they can.

Yeah its wrong but you can't say that only Bill cheated and close the matter.
