I watched a clip on ESPN.com this morning about four superstars playing last night... Kobe v. Wade and LeBron v. Carmelo. They talked about who would be the MVP leader amongst those four, and it got me to thinking about Anthony. I've never been a big Carmelo fan. I think that he's a mid-range jumpshooter who doesn't do that many things well. I know that I've probably underestimated him, but he's never really seemed like an MVP candidate to me. With that being said, I think that after thinking about it today I'm fully convinced that Brandon Roy is a better player than Anthony. Roy is a couple months younger than Anthony. His career PER is a shade better (19.9 to 19.7) on the strength of a badass 25.3 this season so far and Anthony's dip to 17.5 (the last three years he's been around 22). Maybe every other Blazers fan already thinks this, and I'm totally late in coming to the party, but what do you guys think? What do you think media members would say in terms of who is the superior player. Ed O.
At this point, it's a no brainer. When Carmelo isn't scoring he's invisible. When Roy's shot isn't falling he making plays for others like a PG and playing defense. Roy just brings a lot more to the table than Carmelo. Roy could be an elite scorer but is just too unselfish.
the prblem with roy is....hes just not flashy...ands hes not a thug. most kids who like the nba like carmello types over roys. its sad...but true. with that said...roy is about winning anthony is about himself
I think the media would select Anthony. He's given superstar status, which I've never felt he deserved, based on PPG and his connection with James. Even though he's never been close to James as a player, there's still some residual aura from their "rivalry." I'd rather have Roy, since I think he's extremely productive in a way that can fit with a lot of types of players. Anthony can't co-exist with another ball-dominating scorer (Iverson). Roy would have some of his value wasted alongside a ball-dominating player, but less than Anthony would, IMO. And Roy plays better defense. And if Roy keeps this up, he's cleanly better than Anthony. Anthony has never been as good as Roy is right now. I just want to see Roy play at this level longer.
I'd consider Carmelo the more "talented" player, he's a better scorer, he's more athletic and rebounds better. That said, talent isn't everything and Roy is the smarter, team player. The way they're both playing this season, I'd take Roy in a heartbeat. Carmelo's only big advantage over Roy is durability, but it's way too early in Roy's career to know if injuries are a real problem or not.
I think that Roy is an excellent player, he is a team leader which Carmelo is more less just a scoring machine. Roy does more than just score, which IMO makes him so much better then Carmelo. I think that Lebron & Kobe are better players now, but Roy is only 3 years in to his NBA career and showing some pretty impressive stuff. Lebron, Kobe, Brandon, Wade, Carmelo in that order.
Actually I think Melo is probably turning in one of his better seasons this year as a pro. I know that sounds ass backward with his scoring efficiency, shooting percentage and stats way down, but he's actually playing defense this year, his long range shot is much improved and his rebounding numbers are very very good at 8 per game, all of this with a bum elbow. As for the question: Is Roy overall better than Melo? I'm really going to try and remove my homer goggles and be objective, but Yeah, I think he is. He's a better leader, he's incredibly clutch and cool in tight games and his intangibles are better. As for athleticism and pure talent it's hard to say who's better, since Brandon has this way of looking completely unathletic, while still being able to blow by defenders at will and has incredible hops but almost never slams the ball. The bottom line is that both of them are fantastic and whatever margin exists between them is pretty slim.

Roy and Wade are similar, but I think that Roy is better pound for pound player. Both are pretty good, but if I was starting a team today, I'd take Roy over Wade.
I'd compare him to Wade also, but he's not as good as Wade yet.......Wade's part of that NBA Holy Trinity of Bron, Kobe, and Wade lol..........I think Roy can get there though.........
Part of 'Melo's mystique is also that he won an NCAA championship. Roy, in four years at UW, didn't really come close to that. It's a tough call between those two, if you ask me, but I would probably give the edge to Roy because I think he's better than Carmelo as an assist man, leader, defender, and all-around smart player. Melo has better size for rebounding and for playing offense close to the basket.
funny thing though...if roy doesnt score 50...theres no thread right now. hes gotta continue to be a superstar almost every night to be mentioned with wade or kobe.
oh come on. wade has already won a ship and you'd take roy over him? i'm as big of a fan of roy as they come. but come on now
The only thing one would consider Roy better than Wade at this point is that he does not seem to need to be super-athletic to be dominant - which might make him better as they get older and puts less of an injury burden on him - otherwise Brandon has some walking to do to be as good as Wade. As for Melo - I agree with Nik - this is the first year he started moving into the role of a real super-star that reaches the potential of that body of his, other than the volume scorer. While I prefer Roy at this point - if 'Melo really buys into all the hard work of doing the non-flashy things - he could become a real superstar with a fantastic athletic advantage over anyone not-called LeBron for his position.
Haha. No way Carmelo is "more athletic" than Roy. Flashier, perhaps. But Roy plays far better defense and has the ability to break down ANY MAN in the NBA for a drive to the hoop. Last time I checked, that takes some degree of athleticism.
