The Houston Rockets should seriously consider Brent Barry at the PG position, He is 6'6 ,a decent defender and an excellent passer and shooter. Last year he averaged 10 points and 6 assists, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from the Three. Do you guys think we can sign Brent Barry, he will stretch out the defense, just imagine him along with Jim Jacckson opening up the defense for Yao and T-Mac. The Rockets potential lineup may look like this. Brent Barry Tracy McGrady Jim Jackson Juwan Howard Yao Ming Bench Tyronn Lue Maurice Taylor Bostjan Nachbar Reece Gaines Clearnce Weatherspoon Eric Piatkowski Mike Wilks Do you guys think the Rockets should give Barry a 3 year 17.7 million dolar contract
I would go with Derek Fisher personally, would certainly fit JVG's system and knows how to get the ball inside. Brent Barry would be a soild choice, the guy can score, shoot, rebound and pass the ball. Most Sonics fans will tell you they struggle big time without him and is the key behind any success they get.
I was thinking the same thing about Brent. He could hit the three with deadly accuracy. He will spread the defense for Yao and Tracy.
i think either way they will get fisher or barry and noth of them can add to this team pretty well. i became a rockets fan at the t-mac trade cuz t-mac is my favourite player and i hated francis. i think the rockets might have the best team coming outta the offseason, depending on what other power houses do and if denver can spend their $23 millions wisely.
Well said YaoMing03-04. I absolutely love Brent Barry and I think the Rockets should get Brent instead of Fisher. Brent is a bigger, can handle both guard positions, and he's a better shooter. Like acruz2 said, he'll spread the floor for both Tmac and Yao. I really hope they get him.
I personally like Eric Snow as a better fit to this system...He is among the best as a perimeter defender and knows how to get the ball to people without making stupid mistakes...he is the epitome of a JVG point guard...Barry is nice, but is a horrible defender and can be wild and uncontrollable at times...I think with JJ, Lue and a more focused Piatkowski, u have enough 3-point firepower...

As good as Barry is offensively, our new team is focused on defense, and Barry is not a very committed defender. Also, there is no way he would come to us with the contract we'd be limited to offer him. I feel that Fisher would be a better fit for our team, though I'm not really worried if Gaines can live up to expectations and play like the 6-6 point guard we desperately need. If not, Lue would still be a pretty good safety net.
Well, since FA has started, on espn they said the Rockets are looking forward to talking to him soon...but from what barry said he wants to say a Sonic....so i think we need to go after Fisher or Ward.
i watched brent barry working out before the Rockets/Sonics game in Seattle.. He hit like 20 straight 3's.. I was like.. damn.. Anyways, as much as I don't like him, I think Derek Fisher would be the best choice.. Plays tough D, good 3 point shooter, and he's clutch in the playoffs.
the Rockets can't loose with either choice of fisher or barry. fisher is probably the better choice cuz he's used to playing on a high caliber team with shaq and kobe, he'll fit right in playin with Tmac and Yao. both fisher and barry are good 3pt shooters, but derek can play good defense, which fits with JVG. i'm sure Jeff Van Gundy will make either one play defense, but it probably wont take as much effort for fisher as it will for barry.
fisher for sure... i wouldnt mind having barry... or troy hudson but absolutley no eric snow or charlie ward... we need a team with alot of firepower and great d... fisher is the only one of those guys n maybe hudson to have both... ward had no d and we all no eric snow has no firepower whatsoever.. barry is all firepower little d so yeah fisher would b hands down best choice.... It depends on what the rockets are looking for, out of the point guard position. If they are looking for a shot maker then Derek Fisher would be the smarter choice out of him & Eric Snow. But if you are looking for someone who can run an offense,Eric Snow would be the smarter choice. One thing about PG's who play in the triangle(as Derek Fisher has done his whole NBA career) is they usually cant make plays or run an offense. They are not call on to make the desicions that most PG are called to make. Their main jobs is to make open shots & defend. Thats why a guy like BJ. Armstrong was so successful during the early 90's but struggled once he left the triangle & had to become a point guard that makes plays & decision. Thats why a guy like Ron Harper, who was a solid playmaker with Clippers & Cavs but never a point guard, was able to fit with the bulls & Lakers because he was never called on to make point guard decision. I think Derek Fisher is along the lines of every other PG who has played in the triangle. He has never seemed like the type of PG who could make the decisions to be a quality pg in any other system other then the triangle. When the triangle system was pretty much left ineffective vs the Spurs & Pistons the last two years, he didnt step up to make PG decisions. I dont mean make shots, I mean getting the ball to the right pople in the right spot so they could be effectrive. Eric Snow has proven to be some who can make the smart, solid decision as far as running an offense. Also I think Eric Snow is better for the team defense concept of the Rockets. Derek Fisher is good at pressuring the ball but Snow is the better overall defender. I think with Ming lack of aggressiveness, the Rockets really need someone, who is going to take it upon themselves to make sure Ming get the ball in the right spots to be effective down in the low block,Snow is better for that job then Fisher.
However, the problem with Snow now is that we have to trade for him. The 76er's would be very weak at point guard if Snow leaves and we don't give him a point guard in return. What we have to give in return would never equal Snow. Besides, with the contract we've offered Brent Barry, it's obvious that we're having him as our first option and Fisher second. But with Barry at 32 and having a four-year offer, I feel he might turn out to be another bad contract like Howard and Taylor.

But with Aaron Mckie, Allen Iverson,Andre Iguodala they have three players who can all make plays even tho they arent natural point guards per say. So they could sign a cheap veteran point guard like Ward, who wont do to much, just control their offense when need & their backcourt would probably be fine. So I think the sixers might take talent at another postion if offered in exchange for Eric Snow. As for Barry,I like him as a player. But I think a backcourt of him & Mcgrady seems like the Rockets are moving away from what made them successful last year, which was their defense. And it now seems like they are trying to win thru offense, & even with these new players added or possibly added, I still dont think that the Rockets will be able to beat teams out west with their offense.

Both these players are average defenders at best, and both like to push the ball and shoot the three-pointer. That does not fit with Van Gundy's plans at all. His half-court offense might have problems with Barry and McGrady since they like to move around with and without the ball. Both can be more than spot-up shooters, but the offensive set might not allow them to penetrate and draw fouls, part of the reason why Steve Francis failed under Van Gundy. Expectations are high for the Rockets next season, and there's even talk about them being legit contenders for the championship, but I'm not so high on their abilities. Unless our starting five, including three new players, gels perfectly right off the bat, look for the Rockets to get ousted in the first round again.
i'd give the slight to fisher over barry but i'd love to have barry if we couldn't get him. snow is signed till the 08-09 season and he's not cheap at all. i think he'd fit in but i wouldn't want to trade for him. and i don't know why the sixers would either unless they're really looking to rebuild and possibly trading iverson. nobody has a backcourt who has been playing together as long as them. he's been playing for a long time and i don't see his jumper getting much better. so i'm not sure if he'll stretch the defesive that much if at all. he would be the guy that teams would cheat off of. i still really like barry though. he's confident and one of the best shooters in the NBA and plays point at 6 6. and with yao demanding a double team every time he touches the ball, that would leave 4 guys open who could hit the open shot. barry, tracy, jj, and howard/taylor. even nockbar and pike are great shooters. i know he's not the best defender, but we always have yao. howard/taylor would be our biggest defesive hole, not barry, who is decent.
Wow I'm surprised the Rockets offered him that type of contract...he plays NO defense and is by no means a natural point guard...with this type of system, u need a natural point guard who knows how to distribute the ball and play solid, hard-nosed fullcourt defense...barry can shoot and pass (somewhat, hes really flashy tho), but he doesnt not seem a JVG type of player...
I'd also like to add that I would be extremely surprised if Barry passed up that deal, $24 million over four years...that would be severely overpaying him...I've also heard rumors of a deal of the trade exception + Ty Lue for Derek Fisher in a sign-and-trade with the Lakers...I believe its been reported on several LA radio shows...if thats the case, I believe that wouldnt be so bad in case Barry ends up not fitting well in JVG's system...
Barry is an above average passer.. The guy has no problem playing point either, take it from a Sonic fan It's really just his age that is a concern, especially with that monster contract
