"Nightmare."

That was Charlotte Bobcats center Primoz Brezec's one-word description of his last basketball season. So imagine how much he wanted to atone for what happened, and how difficult it was to miss nearly the first two weeks of this preseason.

Brezec didn't go into detail about the family crisis that kept him away from the team until Friday. He asks that fans and media respect it was a serious issue, now it's resolved, and he's ready to start helping a team desperate for big men.

"It was family stuff. -- I want to keep that to myself -- me, my wife and the baby," said Brezec, a Slovenian. "You've got to understand we're by ourselves over here, no parents to help out. We've got somebody (to help) now -- my wife's best friend got in town. Things are great now and I'm glad to be back."

Brezec sat out Monday night's exhibition against the New Jersey Nets and also will miss Thursday's matchup with the Atlanta Hawks. But coach Sam Vincent intends to use him in two weekend exhibitions in Los Angeles.

Despite being behind, absorbing a new system under a new coach, Brezec is confident he'll be ready to help when the Bobcats open the season against Milwaukee on Nov. 2.

"Definitely it's a change, but I've put in three practices and I'm getting (video) tapes of our offense. I'm learning," he said. "It's different, but it's good. I'm getting to know the coaching staff. And I think we'll be all right.

"Unfortunately, Sean (May) is out and Othella (Harrington) is out for a while. We need big bodies. Obviously the team needs me, and I'm ready to step in and help."
