Brian Scalabrine New Celtic? The Boston Celtics and Bian Scalabrine have agreed in principle to 5 year 15 million dollar contract. The deal can not be finalized until July 22nd when free agents can officially sign with new teams. This is a decent move for the Celtics because Scalabrine is good reserve player and in the right system he can prosper. He reminds me of a poor mans point forward. I dont know if I would have signed him for 5 years though. Career avg. of 2.3 pts 1.8 rebs and .5 blks. He did have some good games for the Nets last year.
Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttt?! That was the last thing I expected from the Celtics. With a deal like that they might have been able to snag Vladimir Radmanovic, but Scalabrine? I'm not very excited about that.
I don't believe this until I see a source. Scalbrine for 5 years and getting 15 million? I would barely give him the league minimum! That guy is garbage IMHO, and he would jsut be stuck on the bench all year for the Celts... Where's teh source.
Apparently it's a done deal, the New York Post reported it. I don't understand this move either. Brian Scalabrine is the definition of "soft." I guess Ainge didn't watch the game where Scalabrine refused to go in the post against the Heat when Dwayne Wade, Eddie Jones, or Damon Jones were guarding him. I guess the Celtics wanted a red-haired cheer leader on the bench?
I`m waiting for an official report of this. Just a bad move and Scal is overpaid if this deal is official.
We were having such a good off-season so far until this. I don't understand why they didn't use this cap space to go after a better free agent that can benifit more to the team. But then again we could be under rating him, but I doubt that. This truely baffles me.
Yeah, there was a blurb in the Herald today as well, but I'd still rather this not be true. He's another tall guy who shoots threes. Don't we already have that in LaFrentz? Plus, my dominating memory of Scalabrine is in the summer leagues 2 years ago when, every time he was about to shoot a free throw, this 8 year old kid would yell out "O'Doyle RULES!"
I agree with CeltsMan. Why would we need another Big Man that shoots better than he plays in the post? Lafrentz is limited in the post but none the less he can score against the big boys. Scalabrine is to soft to bang in the paint against more physically dominating players. If we were going to pick up a Free Agent I want a Big Man that is a solid post player that can give Jefferson some help.
Great signing! Seriously, I'm happy about this. We had a need for depth at the 4, and I think he's perfect for that because he's going to except any role that is given to him. He's not the type that will whine and complain about playing time. That way Doc won't have to manage egos and he can play whoever he feels is the best man. We also have team attitude and chemistry issues to deal with, and I think a big reason for this signing is to help with that. He's a standup guy, a smart player, and he brings a lot more to the team than just what you see on the floor. I think the reason for the long deal is because that's the kind of player that Ainge would like in his locker room for years to come. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Career avg. of 2.3 pts 1.8 rebs and .5 blks.</div> That is inaccurate. His true career stats are 3.9/2.9....but he was 6.3 and 4.5 last year. But this is not a case that stats will tell the whole story. I think Ainge likes the intangibles he brings, and let's be totally honest with ourselves: Ainge has a great track record as far as judging talent is concerned. I don't think we can sit here and criticize this move at this point. It may seem like too much money, but I'm willing to place Ainge's judgement above others on this, and I'm confident that this is a good signing for us.
When you look at it from that aspect it is a great signing for us. I might have to take your side on this one 44. I do think he is soft and he probably won't help us much on the floor. But like you said he has a positive attitude. I'm putting my trust in Ainge and Doc on this one. I'm still not to sure about it though..

Those stats were from the Boston Globe. Like I said earlier, the only problem I have with this signing is the number of years. I dont want to see him at the end of the bench in 5 years when we will have perhaps one of the best starting 5s in the league. Plus I truly believe that the Celts will try to rid themselves of Lafrenz because of that new Allam Houston rule. So if the Celtics can release Raef, you will basically have a clone at the 4 without the block shots and without the big butt contract.
Just when you're ready to start liking Danny Ainge he pulls a move like this. WHy in gods holy name would u sign BRIAN SCALABRINI to a long term contract??? What has he EVER done to indicate that he deserves this kind of deal? I was expecting them to sign a good character guy but so what if Brian has good character? He's never going to play much much less than produce and none of the other celtics are going to respect him so why would they look to his character as a role model? even though they arent paying him a ton theyre still paying him more than he should be making and at way too long a contract length. This is just a baby version of the Baker, Blount and Lafreanz deals. Crappy player. too long a contract. cant move it if u wanted to

After all Ainge has done, turn your back on him because you don't like the 3rd string PF he signed to a deal that probably maxes out at 4.5 million 5 years from now. Is that really going to have an affect on our cap situation, at all? Can we please keep things in perspective? Our roster is stocked with young talent. The last thing we have to worry about is a small contract like this. I know that we as fans LOVE to get all worked up about anything that doesn't look squeeky clean to start, but if we take a step back and analyze the situation it's NOTHING to worry about.
I'm not saying that this move alone makes me disaprove of Danny Ainge! He's had a great couple of drafts but lets not forget that this is the guy who traded Antoine Walker for JIRI WELSCH and (an injured) RAEF LAFRENZ! he signed MARK BLOUNT to a max contract! This isnt a huge deal but it is a rather senseless move and seems like everytime it seems like Danny Ainge has figured it out he pulls one of these
I love reliving this same debate. First off, Ainge got the best deal he could for Walker, it also included a draft pick that turned into Tony Allen. Which was the main reason for that deal. I noticed that you left that out. He shopped him for that entire offseason and that's the best deal he got. Also, Blount's contract is too much, but it's nowhere close to a max deal. You're free to complain all you want, but take a look at all the other GMs in the NBA and you'll see just as many, or more, bonehead moves.
But if you guys just got Scalabrine for his conformity and positive attitude why not get a savvy veteran with those attributes and some skill for the minimum? And also, why spend so much on B.Scale, when (I don't think) many other teams are persuing him... P.S - <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Plus, my dominating memory of Scalabrine is in the summer leagues 2 years ago when, every time he was about to shoot a free throw, this 8 year old kid would yell out "O'Doyle RULES!"</div> Noone said anything about this... Too funny!
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Mr.Wade:</div><div class="quote_post">And also, why spend so much on B.Scale, when (I don't think) many other teams are persuing him...</div>Be assured that Ainge is paying market value for him. There's no reason for Danny to offer a contract like that without knowing exactly what he's worth to other teams. GMs just don't do that. The whole business of free agency revolves around it, and to assume that Ainge would just throw out numbers blindly is ridiculous.
