BREAKING NEWS: Bruce Willis, 67, is diagnosed with degenerative brain condition and will step away from acting
    • Actor Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with a brain condition called aphasia
    • His family said in a statement he'll be 'stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him'
    • The condition is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write
Bruce Willis, 67, has been diagnosed with a brain condition that affects his ability to understand language and will be stepping away from acting, his family has announced.

In a statement posted to social media, his family said: 'To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.

'As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.'

The statement added: 'This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.

'As Bruce always says, “Live it up” and together we plan to do just that,' the statement, which was signed by his wife, model Emma Heming Willis, his ex-wife Demi Moore and all of his children, concluded.

According to the National Aphasia Association, the condition is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write.

The association reports the condition is always due to injury to the brain, most commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals.

Head trauma, brain tumors or from infections can also cause aphasia.

It is currently unclear what lead to Willis' diagnosis.

    Me too

    The first three Die Hards

    The Fifth Element

    The Jackal

    Mercury Rising

    The Sixth Sense

    The Red Movies

    Tears of the Sun

    Hostage

    16 Blocks

    Armageddon

    Hudson Hawk

    I could keep going

His last good movie was Death Wish.

He started doing all those crappy movies one after the next and I wondered what was up. Guess he was trying to get as many in as possible and cash in while he could.

Wow that's terribly sad.... he has definitely been one of my favorite actors of all time.

At a time when action heroes were huge buff guys like Arnold and Sly, here was Bruce Willis who was just an average looking guy. Not buff. Just wise cracking. He was basically Ryan Reynolds with a dad bod.

Oh totally, I just always appreciated that he looked like a normal dude. He wasn’t crazy buff or a fighter. He used his wits.

He's been pumping out really bad movies lately, direct to Redbox stuff, and people started wondering what the urgency was. Now we know.

In a few of them he'd been spotted with an earpiece. Was being fed his lines.

In hindsight it still seems a bit exploitative, and the attention he's received recently might've affected the decision to come forward and retire. Don't want to get into a B.B. King scenario where they are cynically wheeling him onstage.

My dad had dementia in the end before passed. The last phone call I had with him, we were having a conversation and then he said who is this. It was devestating. That's the one thing that scares me, that I'll get it like he did.
