Bruins sign Wheeler after reviving arbitrator award

One day after Blake Wheeler was awarded $2.2 million by an arbitrator, he has signed a new contract with the Boston Bruins.

The 23-year old is getting a big raise from the $875,000 that he earned last season.

The Bruins could have walked away from the ruling by the arbitrator, which would have made the forward an unrestricted free agent.

"It is never a pleasant experience for either side to go to arbitration," said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli in a statement. "However, as a manager, you know that the player will be under contract for the following year either way. We talked to Blake before and after the hearing and we are satisfied to have a good, young player under contract for another year."

Wheeler had 18 goals and 20 assists in 82 games in his sophomore season in Beantown. He added one goal and five assists in 13 post-season games. He was originally a first-round selection, fifth overall, of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
