"Winger Bryan Bickell returned to practice Saturday after the Hawks had to play a man short Thursday night in a 5-0 loss to the Dallas Stars when Bickell was a game-time scratch with the flu.

''I wasn't near where I wanted to be,'' said Bickell, who fell ill after the morning skate Thursday. ''[I thought] even if I was near 80 percent, I could fight through it and [then] have a couple days off. But I couldn't even see straight, really. But the worst is past now, and I need to get ready for [today].''

Coach Joel Quenneville said the Hawks have talked about calling up a player from Rockford as a precaution against being left short-handed again. But he downplayed the impact that Bickell's absence had in the Hawks' worst loss of the season."
