One night before phenom Stephen Strasburg made his nationally televised pro debut in Altoona, another right-handed 21-year-old former first-round draft pick received much less fanfare.

Altoona Curve pitcher Tim Alderson, only four months older than the hard-throwing Washington Nationals' No. 1 overall pick, is striving to make his own headlines.

"I'm just trying to get better, day by day," Alderson said. "If I pitch well, things will take care of themselves."

Alderson, acquired from the Giants last July in a straight-up deal for Freddy Sanchez, is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in his first full season in the Pirates' farm system. In 10 innings, he has allowed 10 hits, while striking out four and walking three.

Alderson, the winning pitcher in Thursday's 13-5 victory at Erie, is slated to make his next start Tuesday at Akron for the first-place Curve (7-1), off to the best start in franchise history.
