Buccaneers | Salary Cap Situation Getting Worse - from www.KFFL.com Thu, 24 Feb 2005 10:46:52 -0800 Roy Cummings and Katherine Smith, of the Tampa Tribune, report the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently $17 million over the 2005 salary cap this year, according to general manager Bruce Allen, and the situation could worsen in the coming days. The increase is the result of adjustments in players' contracts that include bonuses paid to those who have exceeded specified levels of playing time or performance goals.

That would be something worth hearing about. If they do i wonder who will jump on him. SAN FRAN????
I hear him, and to a lesser extent Derrick Brooks. That is local radio, and they are kinda in touch with the orginization, probably more than national sources
They should cut Derrick Brooks, Brad Johnson, Simeon Rice, Charlie Garner, Mike Alstott, and maybe I am forgeting someone. But those players alone cost about 50% of their teams salary. Notice how they are all very old, too?
The thing that puzzles me, is how can a team like the Bucs be $17 million OVER the cap, and a team like the Vikings be $32 million UNDER the cap. Maybe this is why signing bonuses are becoming so popular now, is it true the bonuses don't count against the salary cap?
Signing bonuses are a part of the cap. They are popular in the free-agency era because salaries are never guaranteed....signing bonuses are.
Brad johnson is definately getting cut, and alstott is too. It is tough to cut brooks becuase he is still so good. Rice had a bad year last year, so that is hwy they cant afford to pay him. Griese is die a 4 million dollar bonus, so he will be cut if he doesnt work out a new deal

Signing bonuses are pro-rated over the life of the contract. If you give someone a five year deal with a $10 million signing bonus, each year of the contract, $2 million is counted against the cap. If you cut someone at, say, the three year mark, the following year, the rest of the unpaid bonus accelerates to count against the salary cap. That's why sometimes teams keep unproductive "busts" on their rosters for so long...just to avoid salary cap hell. I think that the Bucs should dump Alstott and make a deal with Miami for Konrad. I know they're shopping him around...
