Full audio here. Nutshell version: Noah will probably be a bad contract for some reason. Bulls can't afford their current team if they sign a max FA, so they should deal Noah. I'd be upset by this if I thought it was serious, but after reading/listening Doug for a few years, I'm pretty willing to conclude he'll say the opposite next week anyway. He's been back and forth on every player on the team, and every player that was ever on the team even more than the Bulls themselves are.
in fairness to Doug, he did say trade deng. Mentioned teams that he would fit in. His argument is salary cap. He failed to mention that JR has said time and again he would pay for winner. He would go over the salary cap.
Sort of, but I understood his argument was that everything had to happen this summer. I think what I find objectionable is that he gins up a silly set of premises that, at absolute worst, call for the Bulls to potentially pay the luxury tax three years from now, and use it as a rationale to justify preemptively dumping a valuable player now. Make a move now based on a set of premises that couldn’t possibly be true for a couple years afterward? You can’t know, for example, if Deng is tradeable until, you know, you actually try to trade him. Saying “I assume we can’t trade Deng any time before 2013, so let’s go trade Noah now, in the Summer of 2010” is pretty silly.
Yes, this is dumb... 11 teams paid the lux tax this year. Let's trade a good big man now even though we have no replacement b/c we might be paying the lux tax later.
He never defined "winner". If he ends up with the greatest player of all time on 1 year contacts, I bet he would pay up again. Anything else and all bets are off.
It's not unlike the Bulls' history actually. We're in year 12 of rebuilding. 7th year of Paxhole. Bulls have had 11 top 10 draft picks, two number one picks, three number two picks, and eight overall in the top 4. Rose is the only one still with the team. We're going to have to pay him down the road, may as well ship him out like we did Brand. Aside from Rose, we have Noah (#9), Deng (#7), Hinrich (#7), and Gibson (#26) on the roster.
