"There's a new "VJ" on the Chargers roster. And this one also plays wide receiver.

Vincent Brown Jr., known to his San Diego State teammates for four years as "VJ (Vincent Jr.)," was selected by the Chargers with the 18th pick in the third round, 82nd overall, on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. He joins a club where Vincent Jackson - who also goes as VJ - catches the bulk of the balls.

"Maybe he can be VJ 1 and I can be VJ 2," said Brown. "They can call me Vincent. They can call me whatever they want. It's all cool."

Brown was watching the draft at his girlfriend's house close to campus with friends and family in attendance. He got a call from the Chargers, but didn't spoil the surprise for everyone else.

"I kept it on the low," he said. "Then when they called my name (on TV), everyone went crazy. I talked to all of the coaches. I thanked them for the opportunity and let them know I was ready to go to work."

Brown is the first San Diego State player drafted by the Chargers since they took quarterback Jesse Freitas in the sixth round in 1974. He departs San Diego State as one of its most celebrated wide receivers. During his career, he caught 209 balls for 3,110 yards and 23 touchdowns. The receptions and yards place him third in school history and the touchdowns are fifth on the all-time list."
