Brandon's been very, very good this season and it's nice to see that he's getting respect from coaches around the league. I don't know if he's ever going to get that same respect from fans outside of Portland because he doesn't play a flashy style of basketball, but he's as clutch as they come and brings it every night. You can't ask for more than that.
You know, just because he doesn't have a thunderous dunk every other game doesn't necessarily mean he's not flashy. Some of those crossover dribbles and circus shots in the paint can seem just as flashy to some. Whatever the case may be, I'm glad that he's getting more respect out there. Don't be surprised to see him voted in by the coaches for the All-Star game this year again.
if the team keeps up this pace of winning and Roy this same level of play, no one will be surprised to see him make it again. Probably the only other player in the 2nd best 2 guard in the West discussion is Kevin Martin and he's been out injured. STOMP
Go B-roy!!! THATS MY BOY! He is playing very well... at the begining of the year I didn't really like how he was playing. He seemed to not look for his teammates and involve them as much as before, people like Rudy. Seemed to complain for calls a lot more, and seemed to take a lot of shots to get his points, but ever since the first couple of games, I again really, really enjoy watching his game... he is such a good player... a great player to build a franchise around, imo.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Roy win the MVP. He had a VERY good All-Star game last year, and this year he's going to be more relaxed and confident. His all-around game is pretty well-suited to All-Star games, in my opinion.
I was telling my friend on the way back from the game last night how insane it is to have a player like Roy. You know, he's the guy where you're like, "He's got the ball. He's going to score, and there's nothing anyone can do about it." When he gets the ball at the top of the key and the clock runs down, there's a buzz in the Rose Garden. Everyone knows something unstoppable is coming. It might be a bucket, and it might be an assist. But when Roy has the ball when it counts, you just know he's going to make something happen. I don't think we had that feeling, even with Clyde and Co. There's just a swagger about Roy that makes you say he's got it handled. I will never count us out of another game again as long as Roy is healthy. He's just too good. It's scary.
I had the same feelings with Clyde and Co. You never knew when Clyde or Porter would go off, but you knew one of them was probably going to.
I just re-watched the game... Roy is soo amazing, man. Definitely outplayed Paul. I hope him and Rudy can learn to play a little better together though. A drive and kick from Roy to Rudy more often would be lethal. Just like Oden and Aldridge still need a little work, but the Twin Towers are really starting to get it. And I totally know what you are talkin' about Wastro, Roy has gotta be a top 5 most clutch player in the NBA, and imo is the 3rd best SG in the NBA after Kobe and Wade. I also would have him somewhere from 7-10 on my MVP list after LeBron, Bosh, Howard, Wade, Paul and Kobe.
No doubt. Brandon will never be a daily SportsCenter Top 10 Play of the day guy (like LeBron or Kobe), he's not the quickest guy, not the fastest guy, not the strongest, and not the flashiest guy, but he does everything you want a superstar to do. Coaches know it already, which is why he was voted to the All-Star game last year. He deserves it again this year. And I think that makes him the perfect superstar for Portland. We like rooting for the under-the-radar type of guys, who just do their own thing and don't need to bring the attention to themselves. I wouldn't be surprised though to hear the MVP chants back at the RG later this season.
A month ago or so, the fans over at Lakersground tabbed Roy as "Kobe Bryant-lite." It's not a bad comparison when you think about it.
only problem is odds are kobe won't be hurt this year and phil jackson is a near lock to be the coach. roy likely won't even get the minutes to have a chance at MVP.
It's a great comparison. Like Kobe, he's a talented scorer with an excellent all-around game. He'll never be the caliber of scorer Kobe is but, while I don't agree with those who say Kobe isn't a good distributor, Roy is even better at distributing. Roy could be the best passing two in the game. I'd say only McGrady and James are as good or better, among perimeter players, and both tend to play the three. What I like to see is that Roy has a take-over mentality that he can switch on and off. Roy is willing to take the ball and score it when his team needs a scoring lift, but most of the time functions as a play-maker. It's a great situation when your best player is also your best decision-maker and can handle the ball.
That's one thing I wish Roy would do more. I know coaches like Phil Jackson tried to get Jordan and Kobe to understand that they didn't have to dominate for 48 minutes, just when the team needed it and in the 4th quarter. Roy seems to get that naturally but I wish he'd take over the game more often and just demand the ball every time down the floor. He has the ability to score or get an assist whenever he wants.
depends on what you mean by "caliber of scorer". if you mean flashiness and volume of highlight dunks, then no he probably never will be. if you mean scoring efficiency and clutch scoring, then he's already there. easily in the same league.
I mean scoring efficency on the same volume. This year, Roy has had a similar scoring efficiency to Kobe Bryant's career efficiency, but on fewer shots. Bryant's been able to maintain that sort of efficiency on up to 27 shots per game. I recognize that Roy will never need to, since the team has a lot of scorers, but I don't think Roy could do that.
I agree. Roy doesn't have that major ego where he needs to take over the game all the time. He lets the game come to him most of the time. I think Roy's style of play is better for team chemistry, but he'll never be a high volume scorer where he'll average 30 ppg.
I don't really buy the "team chemistry" claim. Kobe was a huge part of a three-time champion, the leader of a team that made the Finals last year and the leader of a team that is the odds-on favourite to win the championship this year. If that's what poor chemistry gets you, I'm all for it. Roy is a tremendous player. He's almost surely not as good as Kobe, who's an MVP caliber player and a surefire Hall of Famer. But very few players are that good.
