Glad he never got caught in his time here. And man was he smart to stop once he signed that contract. He will one day be in the HOF and it will be because of his time as a Yankee. For a change we got the best of a player and let him walk. Instead of being on the opposite end of these shitty long-term contracts to post-PED 30somethings.
I disagree Blue, with the lowly numbers he's putting up in Seattle I think he's pretty much killing his HOF chances.
I dont think he'll be THIS bad this quickly. His power is out, but he should still be able to hit around .300 for 2-3 more years. He's already near 1900 hits and has 8 3/4 seasons left on his contract. He will likely be a DH in another couple of years. I think he gets to 3,000 hits comfortably and had enough elite 2B seasons in his 20s as a Yankee to get in. I loved letting him walk and it had nothing to do with him personally. I'd never again sign a 30something to long-term big money contract. No exceptions to the rule. I dont care which superstar it is that next hits FA at 30/31 seeking the 7-8-9-10 year $20+ million per year contract. I'd pass every single time. Cubans were where we should have been investing money the last 5 years, guys hitting the market in their mid-late 20s in their primes.
You've got to also take into account that with the exception of 06 he's really had no health issues & yeah IF he can maintain that, 3000 hits is definitely attainable. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canoro01.shtml
...sad thing is, there's not many players from the "PEDs era" as we call it, that are above suspicion in the minds of the HOF voters.
...I'm guessing we'll start seeing a significant decline in 3 years...the last 5 year of that contract will be brutal.
short porch, bad boys around him in the order and playing for a contract. he is paid like he wanted and does not give a crap is my opinion. he was the best at his position while in new york that i have ever watched. total package. like what happened to every receiver that left favre and rodgers has had. zippo.
...and don't forget how he was "disrespected" by the Yanx. ...hell, Cano is not even the best 2Bman in the game anymore...there are at least 3 others who I'd take over him.
How much of that is the line-up he's currently in (little/no protection) and the field he currently plays the majority of his time at (pitchers park)? I definitely agree that he isn't playing for that contract anymore... it's sad that the next payday is the only motivator for many
This year Cano (unlike last year) has the protection in the lineup with Cruz batting behind him so you know he's getting some good pitches to hit. To date however he's just not capitalizing on it. 1/11/253 with a .294 OBP.
I was curious... looked it up thinking maybe home field might be hurting him... home he's batting .289 and away batting .209... That's significant... His 1 HR came away, but 8 of 11 RBI were at home... so I can't figure it out with home vs away... He's also batting better at night... .286 vs .129 with 8 of 11 RBI and the 1 HR at night, but he's had 4 times as many night at bats...
