I don't understand what a VPN is, but I need one and was looking for some expertise and advice. Help!
Denny can explain VPN as a concept better than I could. I recommend Private Internet Access; I've used them for years and never had a single problem.
Doing some bit torrent downloads and watching a jailbroke fire stick. Thinking it might be a good idea to have. you guys think it’s necessary?
VPN is a virtual private network. There are two kinds of VPNs. Companies use VPNs to allow people at home or on the road to gain access to their office network. I assume you're talking about the 2nd kind. People have figured out how to anonymize your internet use by VPNs. Your browsing, etc., looks like its coming from any of a large number of random IP addresses instead of your real one. Some routers you can buy have TOR built in. TOR is a VPN network. If you turn on the feature, you'll always be using a VPN instead of your real IP. The encryption, in theory, makes it impossible (or super hard) to figure out what data you are sending and receiving. We know the government (NSA) almost certainly can bypass the encryption and see that data. Overseas hackers (like the Russians, allegedly) would almost certainly use a VPN to hide their true location.
Most decent VPNs will cost you a few bucks but not much. I use this one and it seems as good as any. You only want to use it when you need it, as internet speed is slow, and some accounts of yours wont load if they cant verify your computer. https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/
Using a VPN is a good idea for your PC and for your phone. Do some research online to see the best option for your region. Some providers make no guarantee they won't log your activity. It will slow your internet down a bit if you can handle that. Also be aware that some IP's are banned on this website as they are commonly used maliciously. Most VPN's will allow you to use IP's from a batch so occasionally you will get IP's that are banned and the other times you won't.
Thanks guys. The real reason I need one is to start up multiple S2 accounts and burn this place to the ground, from the inside!!! I got a ton of blurry photos to still post!
I use this to work from home all the time. Its simple. Its just a third party that allows you to log onto one computer from another. So when you log in, you actually see all of the icons and programs/software on the computer you are accessing remotely. However our IT tech set me up with it, so I don't know how to get it onto your computer to start. Only how to use once there.
VPN is different than that (which sounds like a remote desktop setup), but it's definitely used in the process and I bet your IT guys called it "the VPN" or whatever. VPN has to do with how the data moves, not the data itself.
I agree with what you're saying, but my IT guys say stuff like "OK, let me VPN to your computer to see what you're seeing....taking control of your desktop now..." (only the military side. I don't let anyone on my personal computers).
I recommend https://airvpn.org/ . Have used it for a couple of years and it's one of the best out there. Simple platform to install, many servers, great customer service. It's about 9 bucks a month since it's a European company (7 euros) but I have literally had no problems whats so ever. You want to go with one of those cheapo ones that logs everything be my guest.
So he calls it a VPN and when I click on my remote desktop to log in it says its a remote desktop VPN. Maybe different but very closely related i'm guessing. The remote desktop is what I log on to allow the VPN to work is what I thought of it as.
