Detroit Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson may need arthroscopic surgery on his sprained knee, a source familiar with the injury told ESPN.

Doctors are recommending that Johnson undergo the surgery this offseason in order to alleviate swelling and to clean out loose bodies in his knee, according to the source.

But Johnson and the Lions will determine the best course of action following Sunday's season finale against the Minnesota Vikings.

Johnson, the NFL's second-leading receiver this season, will not play Sunday in Minnesota, the second time this season he has been inactive due to the knee injury.
