"A goal by Clarke MacArthur early in the third period proved to be the difference as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Canadiens 3-2 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.

MacArthur gave the Leafs a 3-1 lead when he cut inside Jaroslav Spacek and his backhander caught Carey Price going the wrong way at 1:36.

The Canadiens got that one back when Jeff Halpern cut the lead to one goal when he scored at 2:28. Halpern displayed some second effort as he and Maxim Lapierre chopped away at a loose puck before putting it behind Jean-Sébastien Giguère.

The Canadiens pulled Price with a little more than a minute remaining and Giguère came up big with a couple of saves against Brian Gionta.

The Leafs grabbed a 2-0 lead before the game was nine minutes old.

Toronto didn't get a shot until the 5:23 mark of the first period, but it was a good one as Price had to make a big save on Phil Kessel and then stopped Tyler Bozak on the rebound. But Price had no chance when Tim Brent deflected Dion Phaneuf's shot from the point at 6:42.

A turnover in the neutral zone led to the second goal as Bozak pushed the puck ahead to Kessel, who beat Price on a breakaway at 8:57."
